hi searchers,...need help..pos impossible help... but if info there know one of you can hopefully find it..so thanking you all before hand

ive been searching for my gr gran Mary Martin Possibly born St Helens 1857 to Rebecca Martin Nee McEwan and Henry Martin..was told of a mary born there dec quarter 1858 (a year out but posible late register) so i sent to St Helens registry office for birth cert (which by the way is better than sending to gro...as no charge for searching if nothing found ...if one knows area ancestor was born in)got a cert today... but alsa...wrong Rebecca , her maiden name was Carnican... so i searched family search site for her...nothing and then swapped surname to McEwan...and up popped a Rebecca McEwan born c1835..ive searched this site before and never found her..apart from in Mary's info on that site..so have doubts about the site..anyway..i would be fair chuffed (as we scots say ) if anyone could find any info on this Rebecca McEwan St Helens 1835 ish... birth marriage ..offspring..death..if any such thing on her exists.. all i have is parents names on grt grans marriage papers and that her dad Henry was a chemical worker furnaceman... so wish you all the best in searching...this side of my family tree very elusive in every way i know..continue to hit and re hit brick walls with them

Just one point


don't be surprised if you found something on www.familysearch, the Mormon site, that you hadn't found before


Seemingly, they cycle information in and out ........... so you may find something today, then it won't be on there the next time you want to see it.


As Roy said, you have to be very very wary of SUBMITTED records

............ it is not unknown for the information to have been "massaged" to fit the facts, to say the very least, made up also comes to mind!!

At the very least, such submitted information will not have any backup documentation so you cannot check it.

If you are sure that her parents are Henry and Rebecca ..... this is the only record that shows up on ancestry for a Mary Martin born ca 1857 +/- 2 years, in Lancashire, with parents Henry and Rebecca.

This is of course the same one that Janice found, and which you have dismissed.


Could you be mistaken ........ in year of birth, and/or in parents???


Don't forget that the age or birth year on a census may be upto TWO years out .................... it all depends on the month in which a person was born and the month in which a census was taken. They were asked for their age ..... and the modern transcribers have then assigned a year to that age.


That is why we usually write a birth year as ca 1857, UNLESS we know the actual birth date from certificate or baptism information.

Sylvia,i think John has Scottish marriage records which give more info than English ones.If not and its the IGI then that is another submitted entry!
John do you know if parents went to Scotland?
If not then Lanchashire death index any of these?

A... i have no proof as yet Mary was born in St Helens only seen posting on family search for Mary Martin with right parents..born 1857..also date of death has been added which is correct

B...parents are Henry Martin and Rebecca Martin(nee McEwan)

c..parents ..irish..english..scots...? i dont know

d...Mary moved north sometime and married a John McMunnagil (Irish)in 1876 and from marriage lines ive seen on scotlands ppl..yes both her parents names are correct

e.. on tracing my mums line..i.e McMunnagil..i found Mary... but thats all ive been able to find..even on threads i have on here

f... i treat LDS site with contemp... i beleive if you enter info on search and find person...that info then seems to be added...so i dont take anything i find on that site as cosher or factual... but was only info i found on Mary with right parents...so i followed that line for now and still am till i find different info..loi

g... Scotlands People site allows you (if a member ) to veiw image if avail of BMD certs so seldom need to purchase as info is there to see..unlike English sites that just take membership to give you an index number etc

looked at four Elizabeths on Scotlands People for 1855 none had parents called Henry and Rebecca...ohhh the plot thickens...lol right im off out till tomorrow sometime..thanks for looking and if anyone hits nail on head they have my admiration
