So I am indeed useless (I've given up on trying to trick the IGI into disclosing some secret thing, too, try though I did). But I've just been sucking up. I have this little Jersey problem of my own ...
Seriously! I do! I have a gr-grfather's sister consistently shown in the censuses as born in Jersey 1843ish. The parents were born in Cornwall and Devon, the next children were born in Devon and Cornwall, there's no marriage for the parents anywhere, and the daughter was born in Jersey.
If they ever married. If she's their daughter (or the daughter of one of 'em maybe).
Their name is Hill. In Cornwall/Devon, that's worse than Smith.
A year ago I was contacted through Ancestry by the grx2 granddaughter of the daughter in question, who had seen my notes all over her ancestors in the censuses. Until then, she didn't know her grx2 gm was a Hill. She'd always been told she was a Miss Montmorency from France, and she'd returned to France before she died. Well, she already knew that part was a crock; she'd found her years before, a widowed day nursery matron in Tranmere, where she died just after the 1901.
It's a family of strange stories, and that's but one. But ... if you are ever wandering around any archives in the Channel Islands and happen upon the marriage or birth of any Hills ... or Montmorencys ... well ... ;) ;) ;)

Have you googled? ;)
http://www.nom-famille.com/nom-barassin.html
(I'm assuming you read French.)
A grand total of fewer than 250 Barassins in France now. Which isn't the same total as the site gives:
En France : 171 personnes portent le nom de famille Barassin selon nos estimations
Quite a few of 'em on Facebook!
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=+site:www.facebook.com+barassin
You never know -- there might be one who knows who his/her ancestors circa 1800 were.

The thing is, all this is known to you -- but not to anyone else!
We didn't know that you knew about family in Canada because you didn't mention it. So finding that there was, and is, family in Canada is certainly something that seemed, to AnnGG and me, worth mentioning and getting clear on. Sometimes, finding modern day family with passed-down knowledge is the only way to find the olde things.
You didn't provide the actual census details in the Channel Islands, so I went hunting for them to see what they said about birthplaces, for instance, to see whether there were any clues.
As for the real meat of your question -- we sorry provincials hereabouts aren't likely to be able to help much with continental records, I'm afraid. ;)

I'm not quite clear about the Canadian angle.
The son/brother Auguste did go to Canada - ?
For purposes of the 1881 Canadian census, it's likely that the individual and/or the enumerator would not have distinguished between the Channel Islands and England.
I don't imagine there were any other Barassins in the vicinity! So I would think that 1881 household would have to be your man. Do the wife and children not match up with the modern-day Canadian family's info?
Looks like Auguste married in the mid-1870s and had children before emigrating.

There are two Barrassin telephone listings in all of Canada at present -- both in Ontario, but in the area north and east of Toronto (one, anyway; the area code covers all of northern/northwestern Ontario), rather than southwest of Toronto where the 1881 census record was. Not surprising that there would be relocation in 100+ years, if it's the same family. ;)

AnnGG, that one you found could be the son who is 7 yrs old in the 1861 census!
I don't see him in the UK censuses after that.
Is it him, Catheine?

Hi Anne I have searched the orginal census 1841 and 1851 in Guernsey which also covers Alderney !851 census says he was born France and a merchant of vegtables, On the birth of his fist Child it says Auguste theodore Barassin .another var/Barrasin Desiree Agnes his wife was born in guernsey 1825 to Desire Agnes c1804 and Marie Magdelaine Le Neveu ,both married in Guernsey.Desire Agnes is the son of Jean Agnes Equerdreville Manche Normandy, One year after Desiree's 1825 birth Her father married Jeanne Le Neveu in 1826,I have discovered that after Desire the father died she must have gone back to France with the family. In 1842 from a constable report Jeanne returned to Guernsey on board a vessal from Cherbourg and was arrested for being drunk on board the vessal and after the hearing was deported back to France. she later returned in 1845 and died here. I know there are connections to Le Neveu/Roger/Agnes/Pitron /Du pont/Mesnil/ but these could be on Desiree's side .The Barassin's are a mystery, there are a few in France, but i cannot pinpoint him down
