Hello Corinne
I've got the marriage details that you wanted but didn't have time to look for Patrick Jnr - it's on my 'to do' list.
Marriage in the chapel of St Peter and St Mary (Roman Catholic) - 22/1/1853
Patrick Mahoney, aged 32, widower, occupation Labourer, living in Sand St, St Helier, born in Waterford, Ireland. Father Michael Mahoney, Labourer to Mary Jones, aged 32, widow, living in Sand St., St Helier, born in Waterford, Ireland. Father William Jones, Labourer.
The witnesses were Michael Jones and Bridget McCarthy.
They all signed the register with their marks.

Hello Gina
I can't do anything until next week but just to clarify. Is Benet spelt with one 'n' or do you think the name started out as the very common Jersey name Benest? There are no Benets with that spelling in the current phone book - which could just mean that they haven't got a land line! There are, however, lots of Benests and Bennetts
Also was Harold born over here and do you have either of them on any censuses?

I have checked the birth indexes from 1842 (when formal records keeping began here) up to 1850ish and there are no Sherriff births registered at all.
I have also checked through all of the parish baptism records in case the children were baptised but not registered and again nothing.
Sorry not to be more help
Pam

Thank you for your kind offer,
I am interested to see if their are any SHERRIFFS listed as my GGG Grandmother Sarah Sherriff (1840) is listed as being born in Jersey along with 3 of her brothers, James 1843, John 1846, Thomas 1849...her other siblings are down as being born in Devon.
Sarah's parents are James c1819 (occ: Stone Mason) and Sarah c1821.
Many thanks
Debbie

Hi jerseylily I wondered if you could have a look for a birth or baptism for an agnes grant raymond mcdowell /mcdowall, she is listed in later census as being born in st helens jersey (which i assume is st helier) in 1830, her father was william mc dowell and mother agnes grant raymond. Many thanks Paula

Hello Catherine
The only Channel Island records on line that I know of are St Helier baptisms from about 1842 up until c1900. I may be wrong but I don't think there is anything for Guernsey.
Civil registration for births and deaths did not begin in Guernsey until 1840, marriages in 1919. The Priaulx Library is the main centre for research in Guernsey and they will do research on your behalf.
"A ONE record ‘Look up’ service for £5 (£7.50 outside Europe*)
Only ONE record can be requested. The fee includes a copy of the record, postage, and administration fees. All e-mailed results are charged at the same £5 rate. *Results delivered electronically by e-mail outside Europe will also be charged at £5.
If a ‘look-up’ proves to be more complicated that first appearance, clients may be requested to pay a higher research fee, but this is not likely to occur in most circumstances.
To request a ‘look-up’, please contact staff on [email protected], or telephone (01481) 721998."
If you have more than one Guernsey look up it might be worth investigating the Guernsey Family History Society who used to do look ups for small donations.
If you find your research straying into Jersey give me a shout and I can do the 'look up'.

Hello Christine
I can't find them in 1851 either, certainly not in Jersey. I'm working at the Archive this Tues morning so I'll see if I can find anything then. I see from the 1841 that they were living in the parish of St Martin and those parish records are particulary good so you may be in luck.

Hi Jerseylily,
Thank you for your kind offer.
I have William Hardy and his Wife Mary (nee Mayne) on Jersey during the 1841 census, they are originally from Dorset (I think), he is a carpenter and they are between 20-25 years old. They have a daughter Emily (Emilie) aged 1-2 who was born in Weymouth Dorset.
I can't find them on the 1851 census and on the 1861 census only Emily, married to James Goodridge and living in Hampshire.
Are there any records on Jersey for this family ..... another child, death etc.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
Christine
