Hi Pam,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have a handwritten modern birth certificate for Mary Maria but I have a couple of queries about it that I need checked. You are correct, her parents were William & Eliza nee Hicks, who married in Portsea. Thank you for looking for Mary (P)ritcher's death.

Mary Noyce's mother, Eliza was born in Bath, England, but when her father died, her mother, also an Eliza, remarried to a William Targett, probably in Guernsey between 1835 and 1840. When Eliza Targett died, her death certificate gave her mother as Mary Richer and the name Ritcher appears in later generations as a forename.

Having drawn a blank with census returns, my only clue to work on is that Mary (P)ri(t)cher was apparently at 16 Old Street, St Helier in 1849. She registered Mary Maria Noyce's birth, but It seems that she was really the great grandmother, not grandmother. I would particularly value your opinion on whether the signature on the birth entry says Pritcher (as it says on my copy) or Ritcher. At least I will then know her real name.

Many thanks, Jeff

Hi Pam
Many thanks for trying. I imagine her father might have been a Baptist minister in the 60s but I can't be sure.
I haven't used the marriage registry before. Do I search just the one for Jersey? Sorry to sound an idiot but can you tell me the best way to access it?
Thanks for all your help

Hi Patricia

Unfortunately there are no Jersey birth, marriage or death records on line. The only way to find them is to physically look through all the indexes. Marriages can be a bit of a nightmare as there are so many places where the ceremony could have been performed.

Sorry not to have been more help.

Many thanks for your kind offer of help.

Looking for Leonora BEWS - 1851 census has her as Eleanore Buse aged 2, 1861 census as Lenorah Bews aged 12 - in both cases resident in St Helier parish, St Helier and born in St Helier. Father's name Thomas, mother Cordelia (sp?). From the age given on the 1851 census, her birth date should be between April 1848 and March 1849.

I'm interested in Leonora Bews's birth / baptism and her parent's marriage - especially Cordelia's maiden surname. The 1841 St Helier census has Thomas and Cordelia with their eldest son Frederick aged 2 months(?) - so I'm guessing they married shortly before that - can't find their marriage in England, so thinking it could be Jersey (assumed St Helier).

If the records show what town / village in Cornwall Thomas and Cordelia come from, I'd love to know that too - but I realise it would be a stroke of pure luck for that to be noted anywhere in the Jersey records!

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed at all.

Regards,

jerseylily

GeordieLad

Thomas and Cordelia don't appear to have married over here, at least not in St Helier, I can try the other parishes next week. Unfortunately formal record keeping did not begin here until 1842 so any information is limited to what the Rector of the time chose to include. For instance:

St Helier baptism records
18/4/1841 Frederick Bews, son of Thomas Bews and Cordelia his wife.
Godparents Father, William Matthews and said Mother.

The births of Isabella Bews and an Elizabeth Eleanor Bews are recorded in the indexes for St Helier and I should be able to go and look at the birth certificates next week - that will at least give you Cordelia's maiden surname.

Cheers

Hi,

Thanks for that - for a start, it's interesting that Leonora might have been Elizabeth Eleanore - so difficult when, at that time, few people would have been able to check the spelling of names for themselves.

The marriage of Thomas and Cordelia was always a long shot - there are Cordelias getting married pre-1841 in Cornwall on FreeBMD, including some 'pages' where the numbers of brides and grooms don't add up. With her maiden name, I stand a better chance of finding a match.

I'll look forward to learning what you find next week - I just appreciate your being there to look.

Thanks

Hello Joanne

I don't really know how I can help with this one. Would his birth have to have been re-registered by his adoptive parents? - if so we have no idea what name they gave him.
Also, although the staff at the Registry office are happy to allow look-ups of birth, marriage and death certificates they are, quite rightly, reluctant to allow access to more recent documents other than to family members, mainly because of sensitive issues such as adoption.
If this is a family member all I can suggest is that you write to the Fostering and Adoption Agency.

GeordieLad

Here is the information from the girl's birth certificates, both births registered in St Helier.

11/7/1846 Isabella Bews daughter of Thomas Bews and Cordelia Wavish. The birth was registered by Cordelia Wavish and the family were living at 9, St James Place.

31/3/1849 Elizabeth Eleanor Bews daughter of Thomas Bews and Cordelia Wavish. The birth was registered by Cordelia Bews and the family were still at 9, St James Place. Thomas's occupation was Sawyer on both certificates.

Interesting that she registered the first daughter using her maiden name, perhaps they married later than we thought - worth a look.

GeordieLad Report 4 Aug 2010 01:03

Hi Pam,

Thank you so much!

On checking for early Wavish events on FreeBMD, those in Cornwall were all registered in St Germans. Between 1837 and 1850 there were 6 births registered and 4 deaths, and several of those tied in with the births - so things must have been hard in that part of Cornwall at the time. There are others who have Bews in their trees, from Sheviock which is only a stone's throw from St Germans, so that would put Thomas and Cordelia in the same locality before they moved to Jersey. I have to see if I can do some more checking, in Cornwall records, but this seems to be coming together nicely.

It seems that Elizabeth Eleanor was simply known as Eleanore by the 1851 census, then as Lenorah (alt spelling of Leonora?) in 1861. She married Henry Simeon in Middlesbrough in 1867, as Leonora Bews, before moving to Scotland! On later census records her name is shortened to Nora - still shown as born in Jersey, Channel Islands (in one case transcribed as 'Chemical' Islands!)

Not sure what to make of Cordelia first using Wavish then Bews as her surname when registering the births - it might be something, it might not - records seem to be full of such discrepancies.

Thanks again for taking the time to look things up for me - it's appreciated.

Patrick did indeed die, I found his death registered in the index that covers Feb 1871 to April 1872, the entry is on page 86.

We have 2 registers for St Helier cemeteries at the Archive and, without much hope of success, I had a look. Lo and behold - Almorah Cemetry, entry No 1989
Patrick Mahoney died the 23rd February 1872 age of 13 years, buried the 26th February 1872.
Minister officiating Rev J Macarthy. Plot 23/21/F - if you're ever round that way!

If you want I can look for his cause of death next time I'm at the Registry Office but it won't be for a week or two.

Thanks Jerseylily
If you can that would be great.
Would you be able to check out his parents marriage to see if that was the correct Mary Jones(Norah)
If I wanted to order the marriage license how do I go about it.

Corinne

The details on the marriage certificate are exactly as I sent you before,

Marriage in the chapel of St Peter and St Mary (Roman Catholic) - 22/1/1853
Patrick Mahoney, aged 32, widower, occupation Labourer, living in Sand St, St Helier, born in Waterford, Ireland. Father Michael Mahoney, Labourer
to
Mary Jones, aged 32, widow, living in Sand St., St Helier, born in Waterford, Ireland. Father William Jones, Labourer.

The witnesses were Michael Jones and Bridget McCarthy.

They all signed the register with their marks.

I wouldn't bother getting any Jersey certificates as they cost £20 each and I can go and look at them for free.

I don't really know how you would tell if it's the correct Mary/Nora Jones or not.. Her name and age are all over the place on the censuses, However both Patrick and Mary are from Waterford and both fathers have the right names. Although the certificate is a bit unusual in that Jersey marriage certificates usually enter the woman's maiden name followed by 'widow of'

I'll check the births of their children to make sure that her maiden name really was Jones but again it won't be for a week or two.

Hi JerseyLily

You help me before and I am hoping that you will be able to help again, but with a different family.

James Journeaux born in Jersey about 1852 to Esther Journeaux, father had died by the time 1861 census so not sure of his name. I have siblings of Charles 1847, Elizabeth 1854 and Emma 1858 (st Lawrence & St Brelade).

James married to Alice Clara (Unknown) probably married about 1885. Their son John Arthur born about 1890. They left Jersey about 1895ish and I have them in Southampton on the 1901 census.

Can you help??

Much appreciated

Christine
