To be honest Tracey, I am not sure that the one in the workhouse IS yours - his occupation does not sem to fit - I believe he is probably still in Deepdale Street but missed off the census.

BUT - don't forget that workhouses at the time were often used as hospitals so, if he was very ill at the time he could have gone into there for treatment, rather than because he was 'destitute', so it is not impossible.

The reason I do not think that the 1871 George in a Manchester workhouse does not fit is just that - it was manchester. Parishes were rather particular as to who they could have as a charge on them so as he was in Preston in 1861 & 1881 it would seem likely that if he was in a workhouse it would be a Preston one. Preston Royal Infirmary opened in 1870.

good point - I had not really considered that. I am pretty sure now then that it was not him in the workhouse. i will look at other census and see if I can find him!

I suspect you will never find George on the 1871 census. In the Lancs Cro there is no record of Deepdale St nor of the higher house number end of Fletcher Road which on the other censuses runs into Deepdale St. The highest no on Fletcher Road is 179 but 1871 stops at 19! As that is also the end of the folio number I would suspect the next folios went missing a long time ago.
Still looking for George in 1851 & 1841.
In 1891 the Preston Longridge Railway Taven publican was Alice Banks a51.

yes it seems as if they have got lost in the passing of time as he was there in 1881 I think I will just have to assume he was there in 1871 to. Thanks for letting me know he was not there in 1891. If you do manage to find him in 1851/41 please let me know - and thank you so much for taking the time to look for me, it is much appreciated.

Just wondering what is Slaters directory? I am almost 100% sure then he was not in workhouse so thank you for putting that to rest for me. I will have to accept the fact I cannot pinpoint deaths for George and Jane as there are so many Wilkinsons. But thanks for all your help! you are most kind.

Slaters Directory is a commercial directory usually produced by county or area. there are other such as Kelly's. Most of them can be found on the site historicaldirectories.com.

I think it is safe to assume George was at 11 Deeepdale St in 1871 if he is shown as there in the 1873 deirectory as the directories would be published a couple of years or so after the data was collected.

I also had a look at the fiche for 1861 and George was born in Chaigley which is near Clitheroe. Unfortunately the 1881 fiches were not available to check the transcription on there as Chadesley does not seem to exist. Chaigley would fit with the son George being born in Longridge.

also found a possible baptism for son George at St Lawrence Longridge
If correct the Jane shown in 1861 is his 2nd wife
