Address: Asylum Road, Camberwell

They are tiny almshouses but they are still there. My OH thinks they are called St Catherines something. (He would be dangerous if he had a memory) Someone I used to kow lived there.

Thank you Julie, I found it using they reference you gave me.

No wonder I couldn't find it before - Genealogist had surname transcribed as Raper!!!! Evie - I sent correction to them!!!

Also found her death in 1874 in Camberwell, age 78.

Will look for Nicholas Wood tomorrow cos eyes are drooping now.

Sue -- do a search of the boards here for "mistranscribed".

It is very definitely a word, and probably ranks right behind "the" for frequency of use hereabouts. ;)

Julie - thats great, thanks, but once again rubbish Genealogist site must've mistranscribed (is that a word?) Elizabeth Richer in 1871.

Is the Licensed Victuallers Asylum in London? Rotherhithe?

Or, maybe you could give me the piece number of the census if you still have it to hand? I'd really like to find the census.

Will def look at the National Archives site for John Holland but haven't had time yet - we had a busy weekend!!

PS Gorleston on sea is just south of Great Yarmouth and southtown is a stones throw from Great Yarmouth so that figures

Jooleh Report 14 Mar 2009 23:58

Well I've had to read the whole thread again to keep up! Look how far down the road you've come since that Ritchie/Marsland marriage was identified!
Now re John Holland - had a browse around as there are quite a few sites to do with seafaring but couldn't find any reference to the 'Nicholas Wood' . (Presumably it was named after someone). You might try Documentsonline from The National Archives & do a search on John Holland or just Holland - there are some seamans registers there and you can give a date range. So you were right about George Holland being John's brother in the 1841 census - I had forgotten that where people were over 15 then their ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in that census so he must have given his age as 29?

(EDIT)William Richer was a publican in 1841 - his widow Elizabeth was down as Licensed Victualler in 1851 and 1861(still at the Red Lion). In 1871 she is 74 and living at the Licensed Victuallers Asylum, a retirement home for publicans - google it there's lots of info on it!

Lots more searching to do then..................................!
Night night

Can't find anything on William Richer & Elizabeth Francis ..... yet!!!

IGI shows John Holland married Elizabeth Hughes on 1.1.1832 in Gorleston with Southtown, Suffolk - wherever that is??

Also, baptism of John Holland 17.12.1808 in great Yarmouth
Parents: Richard Holland & Mary Church
Siblings: George 6.12.1810 & James 28.12.1812

Marriage of Richard Holland & Mary Church on 1.1.1801 St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth

Thats all I've done so far!!!

Not twins by the look of it as Eliza is the only one on that page
midwife/mother being exact more likely

Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 14 Mar 2009 10:35

Certificates have arrived!!! I really want to do some research on them NOW but I've gotta go out - what a pain!!! I'll be back this evening though!!

Details are -

Birth: Eliza Allen Holland
24th Sept 1840 'about 5 half am' (does that mean twins??)
at 52 Brewer Street
Father: John Holland, a Master Mariner
(Yippee Julie, I bet thats him on the Nicholas Wood)
Mother: Elizabeth Holland formerley Hughes

Birth: Albert Richer
26th August 1842 at The Red Lion, Paradise Street, Rotherhithe
Father: William Richer, a licensed victualler
Mother: Elizabeth Richer formerley Francis

I found out that the Red Lion only closed in 2003!!

At least we now know the maiden names of both mothers so we can look for them now

Speak later, Sue

Sorry Sue I know nothing about researching ships either! Try googling it?
Thanks for offering to help but I'm not going to intrude on your thread with my convoluted Moughan story - I'll let you know when I decide to post my own thread though.

Julie, I hope that John Holland is mine as well - it looks quite promising, he is the correct age!! How would I find out about the Nicholas Wood, do you have any ideas? I haven't got a clue!!

What's Grandad Moughan's details? (Christian name, age, place)
Lets see if we can help you!!

Evie - phew!! I thought that I was coming across as a misery, thank goodness its the Barnards that are.

Have you been in touch with Bristol Library to see if they have PRs for Bristol? They were really helpful to me a few years ago - sent me a census entry I couldn't find plus a map with the census address hi-lighted on it?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 9 Mar 2009 19:02

Misery -- just the misery of a tree populated by perverse Barnards, 'tis all!

As far as I can tell, mine actually are Barnards, though. ;)

Jooleh Report 9 Mar 2009 18:59

Ah I shall probably challenge you all to find my Grandad Moughan in 1901 at some point! But not now......................
Sue at a push it may be Jm and a squiggly s on the image but looking at other entries by that enumerator I think it's more likely Jno.
Maybe because I want this next record to be your John Holland! Couldn't find a seaman George or James in the right age bracket.................

Evie - just by talking to you over the last couple of weeks on here, I think I can tell that you must've worked hard & thoroughly on trying to find your Richard Barnard's Mother and I'm sure if you haven't been able to then I probably won't - but I'll have a try!!!

Who is misery? Not me, I hope?
