Once again many thanks to all who helped in my search especially Julie who came up with the goods.
I now have a copy of the birth certificate and must confess that all this time I thought my mother and her forebears were Curtis' they were in fact WOMBELLS!!!
The birth entry shows George's father was Joseph Wombell and his mother was Ann Wombell formerly Baker.
To cap it all you will love Joseph's occupation - he was a Quack Doctor - just about says it all really.
I cannot trace any further back but am intrigued that in 1856 a James Curtis Wombell born c.1836 married in York in 1856 so Curtis must be a family name from somewhere.

Again many thanks

You are all brilliant - thank you so much. Despite the 'Wimbledon' skits I have a copy of his marriage certificate where he does own up to the middle name of Womble.
Once more many thanks

I would like to get a birth certificate for George so need the year, quarter, book, and page numbers but cannot find him in any birth records. According to the censuses he was born about 1851/2 in Sheriff Hutton which is North Yorkshire. Can anyone help please?
Many thanks
