I've seen how awesome you are with finding info for people so I was hoping you could help me with my Pocock ancesters.

I'm trying to find more information on William Henry Pocock, born in 1837 in Brighton, England. He lived in Princess St, Old Steyne, Brighton. And his father Henry (born c1793) who was married to Ann (born c1801)

William went to Australia prior to 1861. He married Catherine Kelly of Queens Co, Ireland on 21st May, 1861 at Beechworth Victoria.

Any information on them would be helpful and much appreciated.

Free to search but you do have to pay to view records.Might be an idea to look for those birth children of the couple who adopted your ancestor.That's if you know the area they were born?If you wanted to know her birth parents names you could use the above site to get her birth record.

With regards to the adoption

Adoptions before 1930
Before 1930 adoptions were arranged on a private basis, either by individuals or by one of a number of charitable adoption agencies. NAS currently holds no records for adoptions before 1930.

Sorry i can't help with your query as i don't have access to Irish records.For BMD i only have access to English and Welsh.For census records Scotland,England and Wales and the Channel Islands.

Have you tried Inis on the Records Office Board.He does Irish lookups and maybe able to help or advise you.

Hi there!

Well thought as you are new might be good to give you some advise re records etc and give you some useful sites.

What i think you should do 1st re the Lynch family is to get 2 certs.The marriage cert for Daniel and Mary.If the census records i have found for 1891-1901 are correct they were quite young when they married,which makes sense cos they were still having children in 1920-21.
What we normally do when tracing back a family is to get certs to back up the info we find.It is an expense but you have to be accurate in tree making and 1 wrong choice-wrong guess can make your whole line the wrong people!So certs are important.

The marriage cert of Daniel and Mary will show the following:

Both father's of the couple names and occupations and also if they were deceased at time of marriage
Both ages of the couple
Where and what date the marriage took place
Occupations of the couple at time of marriage and where they were living
Lastly witnesses to marriage of which there are 2 mostly 1 from each side and quite often family members-siblings or mother or father.

With the info from the marriage cert you can then refer to the census records.The census records began in 1841 and occurred every 10 years.The lastest 1 we have to view is the 1901.Although the 1911 is due to be released very soon and i was lucky to view the beta version in Dec and it was great and really helped me with my own tree.
The census records show a household.Where they were living-address,district,reg area.Who was in the house,each house has a head of house who is normally the father.Of course when a woman is widowed she becomes head of house or when husband is away.All people in the house are listed and where they were born and the year they were born and the age they are.Also census records show relationship of all people in the house to the Head of house-ie daughter,wife,lodger etc.Also we get to see the occupation of the people in the household.So lots of info and very useful.

With Daniel and Mary's cert we can then refer to the census records and find them before they were married-we can do this cos we have the year they were born and father's name and occupation from the cert and any other clues the cert had.

So to order cert you can do this online which i guess cos you are in St Lucia is your best option!Here is the web address below

Cost of cert is £7 but as you are abroad postage will be added i presume.You use the Vol Number and Page Number from the marriage record i sent you and also names,district,reg area.Tick on the form that you have the index numbers(VolVumber,Page Number).

his is free and has parish records for BMD going back to 1500's.Only thing to watch with this brilliant site are to ensure you only take note of records that are extracted.This means they were taken from the parish records.There are also submitted records on this site-these are sent in by public and can often be false and wrong.So basically extracted are fine,submitted need to be checked out.

Ancestry is the best for census records and has a complete BMD up to 2005.Is not free and you have to pay either monthly or yearly subcriptions.But is well worth it cos you get unlimited access to records.

I became quite confused by yours if im honest.I found the daughter born 1895 and thought bingo cos the parents names matched the 1's you gave me.Saw the poss brother next door and thought yep i will go back to the 1881 and see James(Jim)????But no??So hence why i asked you whether the name for James was correct?It just all seems so right the 1901 cos there are also boys there and you said there was up to 6.

Does anyone know who James? married.Would really help to know.And in answer to your question i would say only way to know re marriage cert is to obtain it and see who the father's are listed as.Cross fingers for Richard!

Hi Michelle, I have a problem with James WAY or James Winter WAY in the village of Tolpuddle Dorset. There mabe have been two James's, maybe one with people getting confused. James Winter WAY got married twice so he was using that nam just a bit ...

I think there were two, one born 1773, the other born 1778 (He was buried in Tolpuddle 1857).

Please can you check for a James or James Winter WAY on the 1841 and 1851 to see if James Winter WAY was using that name and who was with him at that time?

Thank you for the details of the Molyneux family.

According to my cousin her grandfather William's brother was always referred to as 'Uncle Jim' - she has no idea what his given name was. :(

However ....

I had a look on the 1881 census for William Molyneux born c1873 in Ince [that was the info from the 1891 & 101 that you found]....... there are loads of William Molyneuxs - but only one born c1873 Ince. :))

The 1881census shows:

They were living at Stafford Street, Hindley and the details you posted on Alice shows they were living in Frederick street . I had a look on google maps - stafford street and frederik street and about a third of a mile apart !


Do you think they could be the right william and alice ?
