Hi Michelle
Please could you do a census lookup for 1901 for Frederick W HOE (born 1881 in Notts) &family. Probably Yorkshire area and poss linked to Railways?
If its any help I tried to do a free census check (which doesnt show you very much) and I found one which I assume is the one but it said FREDK W HOE aged 19. Not sure if this is how it was recorded?

many thanks
Cathie

Wonder if its the same person???

Will check the 1851...funny thing is i had seen a poss Peter on the 1851 who matched the occupation of the 1871 Peter...Clothes Dealer wasn't it?Only prob was there was a son James there already on the 1851 aged 7 so i hunted for a death and couldn't see 1...although its poss that its under a transcript error!!I am beginning to wonder which is the correct name!!There was also a John and a Ellen children with them.I accounted for John who was with a relative on the 1861 and would have left home by the 1871 but couldn't see Ellen...and no death for her?So bit of a mystery really.

Have you got the marriage cert for Thomas?may have a father listed on that?Is the best way to start with to see.

David

David Report 7 Feb 2009 20:52

Hello Michelle

Thank you for taking your time on this for me, I ended up working for 4 hours and think I've finally sorted it. GRO didn't send me the certificate as the fathers name didn't match but I have sent off for it again and not filled in fathers details. On the 1861 census James is living with his father Peter and they are boarding with Margaret and Catherine Clifford (down as Clillord on census). On 1871 census he is living with his father Peter, who has re-married to someone called Margaret and had Catherine and Bridget. It turns out that Margaret is Margaret clifford from the 1861 census and from looking up the marriage she married a Patrick Lochran so after all that Peter is actually Patrick. Could you tell me if there is anything on the 1851 census for a Patrick Lochran/Loughlan/Laughlin/Locklin please?

Kind regards

Danielle

***Michelle***

***Michelle*** Report 7 Feb 2009 18:41

Danielle

Hi Danielle

A name with transcript nightmares!!Well my 1st suggestion to you is to send for James's marriage cert to see if father is listed as Peter on that.

There are several possibilities which i am sure you also have considered.

1) James was not born in Leeds and was born in Ireland. He may have come over at a very young age(as a baby) and so therefore considered Leeds and Yorkshire as his homeplace.

2) His birth may not have been registered. It was not compulsory to register births until 1875.Quite alot of births were not registered.

3) Peter was going by his middle name on the census records. What was the name of the father of the 1855 birth you sent for?It is poss for example that he was John Peter and favoured his middle name?

4) The birth record could be badly transcribed.

So as you can see there are several explanations for the birth record.

What census info have you on Peter prior to 1861?What i also found interesting is i looked for a death of a Loughlan female dying between 1855-1861 in Yorkshire and nothing???So did she die in England?

Also on the 1871 was the Peter you found a Clothes Dealer?

What are your thoughts?

***Michelle***

***Michelle*** Report 7 Feb 2009 17:19

Derek

No obvious death for Joseph but its poss he lived to an old age and would be on the BMD Index. He may have died aged 80 plus this would place him on the index and not show him on the transcribed records.I will take a look later for you.
