Hi i have looked on the BMD between the dates you mentioned and nothing,sorry i didn't get back to you i have been intending to go back to it and search a little earlier than you mentioned.But have been snowed under with requests.Have you tried contacting the record office for that area and asking them for advise?Do you know where he was buried?

Only can see 1881,1891 and 1901 for him.So either he was not born Manners and this surname was taken on when his mother remarried or his birthyear is incorrect in later census records or his middle name was John and going by 1st name in early census records???Very odd.I suggest you get his marriage cert of 1878 and see what his father's name was and witnesses to marriage were.May help with opening more info from earlier census records.

I did find a death for a lawrence in 1889 but then i found a baptism for someone of the same name after the death so im not sure if either of them are right.
What does the 5 mean after institution or vessel?

Just wondering if you could help?! I have a brick wall that I just can't seem to get past.

I have an Emily Kivles who was born abt 1863 in Sheffield (according to a later census under her married name) as she married a Peter Anderson, of which I have the marriage certificate. Her father's name was John (according to this certificate), but I can't seem to find ANY record of the family beforehand (apart from this marriage cert. which says the surname being spelt KIVLES).

If you can help find in any of the censuses I would be most grateful. I just don't know where to go next....
