Hi Michelle,
I have a brick wall!
I wonder if you would please look for a family for me.
i have limited info fo them and can find no trace before the birth of their son apart from a possible marriage.
Also have never found them on any census.
I should have been able to find them altogether on the 1841 but no luck
Any thing you can find would be very much appreciated
I know i can order certs, but would really like to have them on at least one census first
Thanks for your time

Hi again Michelle
Thank you for the info on Joseph Turnock and Levi Norbury. That completes another branch of the growing tree!!
I have another request on the Harwood family. I have John Harwood dob c 1857, Sutton, Lincolnshire, he appears on the 1881 census as living in Bridge Road, Sutton St. Mary, Lincolnshire, with his wife Charlotte (born Boston, Lincolnshire) and daughter Charlotte aged 7 months.born Long Sutton, Lincolnshire) I can't find him on the marriage index, or on the death index either. His daughter doesn't appear in the free birth index either, a mystery !! Can you find this family on another census, or perhaps they emigrated?
As always any help you can give is very welcome.
Regards
Kathleen

Hi MIchelle

thanks for the info on George Bowler. Your right I now need to get the marriage cert to take this any further.

The only query I can see is the use of the middle name Edward has this has not appeared on any other info i've got so far about George.

So hopefully the marriage cert will help clear this up.

Thanks again and I'll let you know when i've received the cert.

Like i say not 100% on this 1.I would advise to get cert and then we can work together on this to make certain it's the correct 1.I can use the info on the cert to trace through the census records. Also we can see what occupation George is listed as.Worth the risk for £7 i feel but that's up to you?

Hi Michelle

can you help me trace a marriage certificate for George Bowler who was born around 1858.

he married a Emily ? between 1881 and 1884.

He was living in Barrow in Furness in the 1881 census as a lodger, and in the 1891 census he was married living in wigan with a daughter aged 8 named Ada who was born in Barrow.

So i'm assuming he gat married in Barrow but can't seem to track him down.

I'm looking for this info to find out his father's name plus Emily's surname.

Hope you can help me.

thanks Dave

Hi Michelle

I have a John Roddam Denham b1865 [in Durham] who married a Sarah Jane Watkinson in 1887 in Durham. [Roddam is his mothers maiden name - she wasnt married when she had him]

They had - as far as I know, 2 children - Mary Jane Denham b1888 and Hannah Denham born in 1890

Sarah died in 1893

John's brother - William Denham b1869 married Margaret Barron in 1894 - William subsequently died in 1895 !

There is a marriage for a Margaret Denham to John Roddam in 1897.

I did wonder if Margaret Denham was the wife of the late William Denham who then married his brother John used his birth surname

The 'Deceased Brother’s Widow Marriage Act ' that permitted a woman to marry her deceased husband’s brother wasn't passed by parliament until 1921

Could you have a look at the 1891 [for John Denham and his wife Sarah] and 1901 for John Roddam and Margaret and JOhn Roddam Denham and his children.

kind regards

Angie

Sophfox Report 6 May 2009 15:29

Hi Michelle, thank you very much for all your time and effort. I wish I knew whether he was Irish or not. I know several of Elizabeth's children were born in Ireland but I believe that is only because James was in the army and posted there.

As with most families, stories are told which are proved unfounded and one told to me was that an ancester was a shoemaker to the young Queen Victoria in Scotland. With all the other tales that I have disovered so far in my family have proved untrue, I dismissed William, as a shoemaker, as being one of those.

Sadly I do not have any-one in my family to ask but I will contact the Southampton Record Office as you suggested and see what happens.

Thank you once again for all your time and effort.

With kind regards

Jill

Jill

I wish i had good news for you...i have been looking for hours and i can't see them.I'm wondering if her father William was Irish and lived in Ireland?Maybe she was born in Hampshire as listed on the 1891 but i can't see her birth registered? It was not compulsory to register births till 1875 though.

If William was Irish it is possible that we do not view Elizabeth on the 1871 and they may have been visiting Ireland?Do you know if he was Irish? The surname could have been mistranscribed and as there is confusion of the 2 surnames,it makes this tricky.I do find most mistranscripts though and like i say i have been looking all eve. There are William's with similar surnames on the census records who are Shoemaker's but the birthyears for 1 in particular i found was way out and also looked back on him and no ELizabeth??

Sorry i haven't helped much.My advise now would be to contact Southampton records office with the info you have...copies of certs and all details and see if they maybe able to find something in the records.
Another thing to try is to post a lookup request on the Records Office Board for this family...alot of eyes may well see something i haven't.
Best of luck and keep me informed.
