Nicola Report 31 Aug 2009 16:39

Hi Michelle

I am looking for a John Colley he was born in Cheshire in 1853/4. I have seen him on the 1891 census but would love it if you could find him on an earlier one so I could know about who his parents are. Also it would be great if you could find out about his marriage to a Mary, but this may not be possible as I don't know her maiden name or the date, I'm guessing they married about 1874 as their first child was born the next year. Any help would be fantastic!!

Thanks,
Nicola

But to be certain on this info i am advising you to get the birth cert of 1911 of Percy. As the mother's maiden name is not on this record because it was before the time they were placed on the record. We cannot be certain that this is indeed the correct mother as Ada.
I have seen Ada i believe on the census records but it's best you get the cert first to ensure Ada was Percy's mother.
Did check the 1911 and saw a Ada Hughes living with a Daniel Hughes so if you have credits maybe worth a look.Ada was listed as born in Darfield in 1884.This does match the Ada Margison i found on the 1891 census.

Hi Michelle I cant find one of my ancestors on the 1861 census and was hoping you could help. His name is Robert Burbage -he was born in Nottingham in 1827 and was a lacemaker by trade -his parents are Joseph and Ann and he married an Elizabeth Wheelhouse in 1852.He appears on 1841,1851 and 1871 census ( he died in 1871) but not in 1861 one .It did occur to me that he may have been involved in Crimean war or perhaps had to go into a workhouse or even prison ? Any help you can give would be gratefully received-Thanks Karen

hello michell, I was hoping you could do a census check up for me...

Laurence/Lawrence (R?) Openshaw (c1806) who married a lady called Ellenor/Eleanor. I think they may of lived on Wash Lane (Brick House)

Their son was Thomas Openshaw (c1838) married to a lady called Agnes.

Thomas's son was a Alexander Openshaw married to a lay called Emily

I think Laurence/Lawrence was a mill owner.
All theses people wher from the Bury/Heywood/Birch area.
I have tried to do census checks but can't get the ones before 1881
could i possibly get a 1901 census check too.

Thanks
Lorraine

Please can you look for John Allen's family, he was born 1849 Maidstone, and his parents were William Allen born 1830c London and Mary Woollett 1830c. On 1851 census siblings of John were Flora, age 10, Sarah, 4, Mary 2 and charles 3.

Anthony Report 21 Jun 2009 15:02

Hi Michelle,
This is a long short which I am trying on a number of friends whilst trying to find Mary Fryer!
The two marriage certificate(s) in 1877 of Mary Fryer and my ancestor James Perry differ. The official 'standard version' gives her father as Thomas Fryer (deceased) [the spelling of the surname is a variable], the copy from the RC church where they were actually married gives no parents' names for her, the section was left blank. The suggestion was made that she was illegitimate and was brought up by her grandfather, i.e.: Thomas Fryer, whom she claimed [and probably thought of] as father in the official certificate. As she was RC, this second record should be given more credibility.
Interestingly, there is an IGI record of a Martha Fryer baptized 27 Aug 1843 in Sedgley, illeg daughter of Martha. This daughter is not found in the GRO nor the Staffs records for the period or area (she may have been born elsewhere). Martha, the mother born 1820, seems to be the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Fryer of Sedgley, Staffs. They had a number of chuildren including Martha and a Mary. Martha got married (I think) in 1844 to William E. Miss.
It seems worthwhile to check the census records of Thomas Fryer of Sedgley for the years, say, for 1851 through 1871 to see what, if anything, they indicate about the daughters Martha and Mary, and particularly if there were grandchild(ren) living with them.
A final thought, Mary had converted to RC sometime before marrying James, it is possible that 'Mary' was her RC baptismal name; her original name could have been something else like Martha.
Best regards
Anthony
