When I first started this in early October I got stuck looking for my grandmothers info so I put a thread on and a lady called Dee helped me out. I couldn't understand when I got the grandmothers birth cert. and saw Durkin as a maiden name of her mother - dumbo!! and Dee (from Genes) found Ann Durkin, 56 Duncan St. for me and told me she was the one I was looking for, and obviously informed me of the close relationship. Because things were getting complicated for me I put all the paperwork away and thought I'd concentrated on my grandfather's side. The unfortunate thing was to start with i was following a wrong path on the grandfather's side - got the wrong birth certificate when I spoke with Dee. But hopefully I'm learning all the time.

I'm gobsmacked!! I've been having a job getting my brain round all the James & Annies - now to have to sort the Margarets & Johns out - I'll end up with a nervous breakdown eh eh. I daren't ask which cousins!!

I know its funny the same names all the time!!Im a little confused too.But it does look like Margaret from the 1881 on the 1891 and 1901 i found and there was a John Durkin on the marriage record and i thought....got to be the 1!!!Might be an idea to get the marriage cert for Mary Ellen at some point to check father's name and occupation.I couldn't see Bridget on the 1871 to check for who her husband was and we may be barking up a wrong tree!!Their are rather alot of Durkin's in Bradford area arent there!

Bridget's husband was John - A Tailor - deceased on son James' marr. cert. in 1882, and a Margaret Durkin witnessed the marriage.. These girls are all James's siblings aren't they? don't scare me now!!

I couldn't find Bridget on 1871 census as either widowed or married. But did only look for Bradford. Maybe worth a look a bit wider eh!

Sorry to scare you!I just think its important to follow things up with certs when you can to be 100%.Well looks like we have the siblings and their marriages.No sight on the 1871 makes you wonder if they were visiting Ireland?Did know father was John but wondered if you should confirm with certs?
What about asking the helpful Bradford office to see who registered this death

Have just phoned Bradford for John Durkin's death cert 1875 and Mary Ellen's marr. cert. I gave all the info I had on each of them, so hopefully, If I don't receive a phone call in the next couple of hours we may have some confirmation on route!!

Im crossing fingers!!!It is a tricky 1 these Durkins at there were quite a few of them in the area all with same 1st names!!Lets hope we have the right 1's this time.

Bradford records just phoned me the marriage cert seems ok - got down father as a Tailor, but death certificate is John Durkin - Iron Moulder - Died in the workhouse. The lady there said if he was in the workhouse then the rest of the family probably would be. That at least tells us it woiuld seem to be the right family

Marriage cert sounds the right 1 good.So death not the right 1?unless he changed profession?Oh what alot these Durkins are!Might be interesting to see who the witnesses are on the marriage cert you never know it may give more clues!!!Without looking back on my thread wasn't the marriage after 1882?if it was be interesting to see if John if marked as deceased on that.
On Bridgets record her sister was on listed as County Mays i should imagine this should have read County Mayo birthplace be really good if we could narrow the place in Ireland they were from.

Yes the marriage was 1891. Have spent best part of the afternoon looking for John in the 1881 & 1871 census, but not had much luck, found a John & Bridget in Wigan in 1871, but they were a bit too young plus no kids. Am going to have another trawl at the deaths for John, last child born 1868 (we think) so I suppose 14 years isn't too long to check, I'll also widen the field to Yorkshire as opposed to Bradford only, never know he may have had to take work away from the family, that's why he can't be found. Although would be a lot easier if he died in 1869 wouldn't it.

Wonder if you can help with another Tarbox! I've been to see my mum today and updated her on my progress, and she informed me that I'm missing one of her aunts!

Her Grandad was Frederick Tarbox, married to Mary (don't know the last name), and I already have the following children from the 1901 Census:

Walter T (I think this has been mis-transcribed on the GR database as Walker S but I know otherwise)

Mum says there was another sibling called Nancy, but I haven't been able to find her on the Free BMD indexes. She could have been born in (St) Pancras or possibly Berkhampstead if she is older than Frederick.

She married a William J Beal, who is a witness on my grandparent's Wedding Certificate.

Finally, I wouldn't be overly suprised if her name wasn't really Nancy - they were a funny lot on my mum's side - Mary was always known as "Nin". Mum didn't know her real name, I only tied Nin to Mary because I found her marriage records that show she married a William Hughes and mum remembers that was her Uncle.
