There are no census with them together because by 1851 she had died.We know John was born around 1846 so she must have died between 1846-1851.Looking on the names on the marriage record and poss deaths for female Laws between above dates i would say this could be her....

but this is presuming they stayed in same area as marriage record.To know for sure you would need to obtain the marriage to see what her maiden name was or John's birth cert or even this death cert to see who registered it.

Hi Michelle - can you help me? I'm looking for a date and parents of a Henry Charles Hicks who was born in 1926 - Belfast, county antrim. He must have travelled over from Ireland at some point as he married my nan Elsie Meaking in Stratford Upon Avon in 1950. Im sorry but i do not have Irish records.My advise is to try Inis on the Record Office Board he might be able to help as his area is Irish records.If not he will be able to advise you.Do a search of the Records Office Board for his thread(Think its a he??).
Also another thing you can do is to obtain the marriage cert of 1950 this would give you the father's name.
Have a good google for Belfast records-they maybe some online.Irish Ancestry is not easy and their aren't so many records as the English.

Hi Michelle - thanks for that - i thought as much, they were only made compulsury in recent times which makes it really hard. I do have some english relatives I'm trying to trace also. It Henry Meaking c1900 - i have found a census from 1901 that contains him in it - but we thought his mother was called florence, but on the census its Alice Meakin. Henry was born in Birmingham. Dont know if that much use? x

Perhaps you could help me thro the trees? I'm not being lazy, have spent so much time trying to distinguish between all "James Durkin Mason/labourers" that I'm going round in circles!!

Info found so far:

My grandparents were 1st cousins. (My grandmothers mother was Annie McGlenn (nee Durkin), sister of James, my grandfather).

Grandfather - James Durkin (1887) m Margaret McGlenn (1887), have been able to follow back on her side (McGlenns). The birth & marr. cert of grandfather states his father (James again) was a Mason/Masons Labourer and his mother's name was Annie Mullaney.

I was unable to find him in the 1901 census.
I think I found him in 1891 census aged as 2 yrs staying with relatives (Mullaneys) at 26 Longcroft Rd Bradford. I believe his parents James & Annie Durkin (nee Mullaney) stayed a few doors down at 84 Longcroft Rd. Going back from this is where I've got a bit lost!! So many Masons Labourers called James Durkin!!

I got marr. cert for G G/F James (1862c) who married Annie Mullaney (1864c) in 1882, his address was 56 Duncan St, Bradford and hers was 27 Dyson St. Bradford, but his occupation was stated as a "Baker" and not Mason or Labourer. Witnesses at this wedding were Thomas Mullaney and Margaret Durkin (siblings?). Can't find any Durkins with occupation as Baker. Not sure which occupation to follow now.

G G/F James Durkin's father was called John (GGG/F) who was deceased at his son's wedding date, his occupation was Tailor - can't seem to find one of those either.

Until I can find more definate info on the G Grandfather I am unable to send for his birth certificate, because I'm not really sure if he was born in Bradford or Ireland. There are no elderly relatives left to ask.

Is there any chance that you could point me in the right direction. I've looked on Ancestry and Genes, but just seem to be going round and round in circles, and going over the same things.

Could you let me have the ages on the marriage cert for James and Annie please.Also seems odd that Baker is listed as occupation this is a trade and quite removed from Mason work??Have you got James 1887 birth cert?Was occupation of father Mason on that?I think its likely that the family may have been in Ireland for the 1901 as they not showing as yet-but will look further.

Occupations can change and its poss that when he married their may not have been much work around so he had gone to work in a friends bakers?Its obvious that his main job was Mason and if this is on his son's birth cert also then you know that is for sure.
Will see what else i can find but it maybe that the 1881 is the 1st census we see this family on as they were from Ireland they may have come over for work when they reached 13-17 years old.
Still would like the ages on the marriage cert though please for James and Annie.

I think before the 1881 they were in Ireland.All Durkin's mentioned on the census of 1881 i found were born in Ireland and i think they came to England to work and stayed with their cousin's the Martins who were in England-i have seen them on the 1871 and if Thomas Martin was born 1861 in Bradford they must have been in England for quite a while when the Durkin's came over.Pure guess work but maybe they came over also cos John Durkin had died?
There is someone called Inis on the board they do Irish lookups.I suggest from this point you contact them with all the info you gave me plus this poss 1881 and see whether they can find the family in Ireland or see when they came over to England.

Irish Ancestry is not very easy im afraid and records and not so full as the English.So good luck with this.Inis was on the Records Office Board so have a search their 1st and if not try Trying to Find board.They are the best with the Irish Lookups.

Just got in from work - thanks for info so far have just printed off so will have a good look. Here's answers to first lot of questions:

Marriage Cert date = 14/10/1882
James 19 yrs
Annie 18 yrs
Definately his occupation stated as Baker.
James 1887 birth cert - His father 's occupation stated as Masons Labourer. On James 1887 marr. cert which was in 1911, his father was deceased. Did try to find date of this but didn't have any luck.

Have had a look at what you've sent, seems reasonable, I was looking at Masons that were older i.e. about 24 yrs, which is what confused me but only query I have is on marriage cert other witness along with Thomas Mullaney was a Margaret Durkin - I thought maybe it was James sister, do you think it could have been his mother, as there's no Margarets with this family?
