It says Thomas is the Grandson. This was the only Letson family on the 1851 census in the area that you mentioned John Letson was born. Of course we can't say for certain this is John's family but it looks very possible.Based on the birthyear of 1824 and looking at the possible siblings i would say Thomas and Nancy are the parents. The eldest sibling listed is Thomas above aged 35 in 1851.In 1851 your John would have been about 27 putting him as 2nd youngest in the list above of siblings.Arthur being the youngest. I looked hard and there is very little more to find. You should now contact Irish records office to see if they hold any information of birth records in that area.Records for Ireland are not good some have been destroyed over the years. As i mentioned before my area i work on is 1841-1901 and is mainly English records as i have access to good resources for these. Good luck!

Hi Michelle
l hope your ready for this brickwall. This surname varies between Powney. Pauntney and Perny l have my husbands Powney ancestor's on the 1841/51 and 61 but there is no sign of 2 of them on the 71. l have checked for marriages and deaths but no sign.
1st is William Powney c1848 Sedgley. Staffordshire 2nd is Daniel/David c1850/2 Sedgley Staffordshire. l give you two names for the 2nd son as l have been given a David 1850 or a Daniel 1852 on 2 different look ups for them as l cannot see the census l don't know which is right.
The 2 boys above are at home on the 1851 with their parents William c1811 Sedgley. Staffs Pauper Coal Miner Hannah c1810 Devon. John c1834 Sedgley Lydia c1838 ............. Sarah c1842 .............. Phoebe c1845
l have their older siblings on census but have only just started to look for these 2
Thank you in advance

Hi,have started to look at your brick wall. Couple of questions:
Have you seen them on any other census records other than the 1851-61? Have you looked at the option that they have left the country?
I will carry on looking, on 1st glance this looks like a long search so i will in the meantime move on after i have looked for a while onto my next look up and wait to hear from you re above questions.
Thanks Michelle

Hi well don't think you are going wrong...this has had me puzzled also. There is a huge confusion over the spelling of the surname which shows as 2 spellings on the marriage list! Now i have found what looks like the family on the 1881 BUT what has confused me is Michael is going by the name John J??there is Bridget there and her details all match the 1891 there is John J junior with all details matching. There is an extra child called Michael whom i have found a death for in a variation of the surname. So is this your family??Now what makes it more confusing is this family i have found are living in New Street!Occupation of the 2 records is the same also Bricklayers Labourer. Have you got any of the certs for this family?Just wondering which is the correct spelling?? Although looking at the 1901 you have as Farney i have a record with it as Tarney same as this 1881 record i have. Well take a look and see what you think
1881 England Census about John J. Tarney Name: John J. Notice the address New Street! Well looks like in 1882 poor little Michael aged 1 above died
England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915 about Michael Tarney Name: Michael Tarney Estimated birth year: abt 1880 Year of Registration: 1882 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun Age at Death: 2 District: Wakefield County: Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire Volume: 9c Page: 40 (click to see others on page) Again listed as Tarney. The trouble is in those days when people gave names for records if they had an accent mistakes were made.Especially if the person couldnt write and just spoke his name.Maybe this is what has happened here?Michael giving information to the gentleman taking the census and not being heard correctly?Or maybe Tarney is the correct surname?
Do you have the both the 1891 and 1901?I presumed you did as you had mentioned them.I do not have access to the 1911 however not on the site i use. Will see what else i can find.

Hi Michelle, I have a brick wall, in that I can't find two marriages on either IGI or FreeBMD. John Penfold (1824-1907 Patcham, Brighton, variously described as cordwainer, shoemaker or bootmaker) In 1851 John was 27, unmarried, still living with parents James and Fanny. First wife Eleanor, born c1826 Brighton appears on 1861 census, age 35, occupation shoebinder, with children James 12, Mary 9, John 8, Eliza 6, Sarah Ann (my great grandmother) 4, Rosina 2 and Alfred 4 months. 1871, still in Brighton, John aged 47, bootmaker, wife Jane 41, children Sarah A 14, Alice 8, Annie L 3 and Frederick 1. Someone else's tree had Jane as Jane Elliott, born Brighton 1831, died 1901. But I can't find either marriage and can't find Eleanor's maiden name. If you can get through my brick wall I'd be ever so grateful! Thanks. Linda
