Have you found him on the FREE 1881 census?

A quick look at the census shows at least 3 William Smailes c1831 Tanfield, so that's where the confusion may arise.

Tanfield seems to be part of Chester le Street, Durham

Maybe Jane is Thomas's sister, that is all i can think of. If anyone could find out i would be extremely grateful.

I never realised that she would of only been ten. Maybe all the information i received through the hot match was wrong.

He was born in Tanfield, Northumberland and his mother was born in Northumberland and it may be a couple of years out

by what you're telling us his mother had a different surname from him and was only ten when she had him

I am really confused about who William Smailes born 1831 married. I was told through a hot match that he married two women and had 9 children however as i am going through the family this does not seem to match. His mother was Jane Aynsley born 1821 and his father was Thomas Smailes born 1811. So could anyone help me find out if this is true. Thank you to anyone who helps.
