Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, had a few problems with provider and not been able to get online, sorted now.
There are quite a few William Cowleys on the lists, although none with an 1862 birth date. Without further info, it will be impossible to pinpoint your one.

Hi Julia I am wondering if you could have a look for an a Alfred Oswald Reade, could also be under the name Main-Reade, he was born in 1874 on the Ascension Islands. He was in South Africa up until the late 1920's I think. Would you also be able to look for a Gladys May Merchant, born 1896, left England in 1921 for South Africa. Merchant was her maiden name, possibility that if she did return she would have married, but you never know. Thank you Debbie

Hi Julia, sorry server down for the last hour. None of the below because the ages are all too old. Thomas would have been about 20 in 1878 and no older than 23 in 1881, also the arrival dates are too late. By 1884/5 he was living in Liverpool and married. Family information says he came back from Canada and we do not think via the US. Thanks for your help, I will keep on looking for my very elusive ggf, luv Hilda

Hi Julia, I can see what might be my relation on Ancestry but as I am not a member can't look at the record. Thomas Moore born 1858 Ireland arrival port Liverpool & Queenstown, Ireland - he may have been coming in from Canada, but not sure and the years would be between 1878 and 1881
If you can help I would be most grateful, thanks Hilda
