Did you read the correction for Francis Monck on the 1851 census? You should contact Kathryn B.

Ozi.

Peter Report 15 Oct 2008 01:07

Thanks for this; my main interest now is what became of the man after his imprisonment. I have looked on familysearch, but nothing for 1881 ... I can't even find a death. Did he emmigrate, or have I just missed him in the later census/Free BMD death records?!

Cheers,

Peter

Yes this is him: I have found a reference on a website that states he was baptist minister! Thank you! I shall see what else I can find!

So he was married (presumably between 1860-1871) ... Thank you so much!

Dear all,

As part of research for my degree I am looking into the Spiritualist movement in the 19th Century.

In the autumn of 1876, Francis Ward Monck, known commonly as Dr Monck, was brought before the Huddersfield Magistrates for holding a seance at a house in the town, which seems to have ensued in a fight after it was suspected he was a conman. Out of the assembled audience he hit a man with a box, ran upstairs and espaced via the 'waterspout' (drainpipe presumably).

The Birmingham Daily Post on Saturday, October 28, 1876 stated that:

... Rev. Francis Ward Monck, formerly a minister at Bristol, but now a Spiritualistic medium, was apprehended under a warrant charging him, under the Vagrant Act, with having on the 23rd of October, used certain subtle means and devices to decieve and impose unpon her majesty's subjects.

Monck was evidently a wealthy man, although how he earned this money is not known although:

... kept his carriage and yatch at Bristol.

Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London, England) reported on Sunday, February 11, 1877 that an:

... appeal was accordingly dismissed with costs. The accused was arrested on Friday and taken to Huddersfield. On arriving there at about 10pm. he was mobbed on his way to the police-station. Dr. Monck was taken from Huddersfield to Wakefield Gaol yesterday morning, there to undergo the three months imprisonment to which the Huddersfield magistrates sentenced him in November last.

My query is can anyone please help me try and find Dr. Monck in any offical records. All I know for definite is that he was a Reverend from Bristol in the 1870s, who seems to have been relativley wealthy (rich enough to own a yatch and carriage). I don't know where he would be in the census, his birth date or place, or his date of death, or even if he married!

I understand this is a big request, but any help is greatly appreciated, and hopefully I can include some of this research as part of my degree.

Cheers,

Peter
