My kids dread the day I get Hot Matches as they know I will be scanning the list for ages. Husband, dad and mum smile and say "thats nice", but nan who is now 94 is great. She asks me every time I see her if Ive found anymore on her family. Makes it all worth while as I get to hear all the old stories - again!!

Several years ago I met a man who was doing family history and he was telling me how interesting it was. I thought "How boring this man is obsessed"

Well here I am doing the same thing. It seems you get to a certain age when these things become important.
In the future your children or grandchildren might be very pleased you have done the work

Susan
i know what you mean. I fortunately have a niece who is as nutty as me about genealogy and a large family 4 sisters and two brothers still living and most are interested but I live with a house sharer who is always having a dig. Makes me all the more determined....it is like being a detective and find links in the family that nobody knew about

My partner has no interest in family history but is more than happy for me to do it. If I get it wrong, I will get a hug from him but he cant get excited for me when I go further back. He thinks the present - and the future - are the things to be concentrating on.

Im not neglecting the present and I am planning for the future as Im starting an Open University course next month too. But my family history is fascinating and addictive (does anyone else think that?!) and its important to me - my kids love it and are just waiting for the big scandal or the link to royalty.

Its nice to think I will have a legacy to leave them, for them to pass on to their children.

Hahaha Christine, that made my laugh, telling them simply no!
Great Stuff, I'll have to remember that one. LOL
Did you tell them it is write-protected?

Kindly tolerance are the words I would use.

Mind you, I can sometimes see the words 'danger, obsessed woman at computer' lurking in the eyes of my family.

Thought it was just my family. They make remarks like 'thats interesting' or 'let me know how your getting on' but I know they think I'm crazy. One family member laughs at me but I don't care I'm enjoying myself better than watching daytime T.V. Pat

Blimey! I thought it was just me who got disinterest from some of my family... or comments like 'they're just a load of names to me'...

I've only just started and have already had many ups and downs, but it all makes wonderful sense when you manage to piece things together. I'm having a blast...

Plus I've been contacted from a family member we didn't know existed, and all from adding my bit of family knowledge to this site.... fabulous!

As much as there is frustration at not being able to locate the info you want, there is complete joy and excitement when you finally do! Not a bad pastime by todays standards...

My hubbie can wait for his tea!

Have to add too!!

When I started researching my mums family -
No-one was interested and were actually very UNhelpful! - refusing to answer my questions!

However - I continued - spent a fortune on certs and travel -

Now that I've got a fairly comprehensive tree -
my aunts and uncles want copies!!!

I have told them politely - NO!!

I also have a family who are`nt interested, BUT i love tracing the family roots, you don`t know where your going if you don`t know where you came from. Also if you go to get a message from a Medium, if the Medium comes up with family names to give you a message, then because you`ve traced your family, you can accept alot more from the Medium. I have found & i`m in contact with alot of relations i did`nt know existed, its Fantastic, BEST REGARDS & LUCK TO YOU ALL. LUV Harry

My husband and I go to places for family research sometimes. I have noticed when he finds where his ancestors lived he is really interested. He will take photos for me too.

He does not like researching on the comp though.

I have to add my bit: my family think I have totally lost it ....bit mad!!!! but it makes me all the more determined even when I hit a barrier, as I have at the moment. My Dad left me some scribblings years ago and I just went from there.
Keep at it it is fun and you learn alot about your Ancesters and also how life repeats itsself over and over again. Jay

Hmph, mother goes... don't know why you bother with all that stuff.....total disinterest from her.

So I do it all the more with gusto !!!

Susan

Susan Report 14 Oct 2008 00:14

Dear all

How do you cope with total disintrest from rest of family- Or are you lucky enough to have supportive partners. I sit at computer and shout " wow I find date of death for xyz" and get the reply "and!!!!!" .

Just wonder how other manic researchers cope with this.

And yes I was carefull to trace as much as i could of his family first.

Regards

Susan
