One witness is almost illegible as it has been crossed through. I will see if my husband can enhance the image.
The other is an Andrew Hislop. It is significant to the whole story but it is frightfully complicated.
(Suffice to say that he is somehow related to David Montgomery's Scottish mother Jane Heslop, who ran away and left husband and children when David was about 8. She joined her lover, a Robert Murdoch and they had five children in Jarrow and Willington: both Northumberland and Durham Willingtons ... whilst using the name Petticrew. Jane and Robert finally married in 1886 and guess who was a witness at THEIR wedding ... one Henry Purvis.)
The above may become relevant but for the present it is confusing.

Hi Carole,
How else can I help you.?

Carole Report 18 Sep 2008 18:33

Hello Vera
Nice to see you again.
Yes Andrew Hislop was Jane's much younger brother.
But ... have you noticed where David Montgomery 1852, was lodging at the time of the 1871 census?? With a William CUTHBERTSON and his wife Isabella.
I am looking to find if the Cuthbertsons might be related to the Montgomerys or Hislops.
I know we debunked JOHN Purvis ... but that doesn't stop him being related to Thomas Purvis, so Aunty Cuthbertson (was it Ann?) could still be in the picture and could have been the link that brought David and Elizabeth together?
What think you? Am I being fanciful?

Vera Report 18 Sep 2008 18:46

Hi Carole,
I think Isabella Cuthbertson nee Hislop is the Aunt of David Montgomery...on page 6 on your thread David is living with them.

I have deleted the part that I said David was Isabella sister....obviously that
is wrong....he is her nephew.

Yes, it was Ann.

Vera
I frankly don't know quite where to go next. You have probably gathered that I am not seeking Purvises for their own sake. They are peripheral to the main event but may help me find out more about the Murdochs, the Hislops/Heslops and the Montgomerys. David married a Purvis ... A Purvis was a witness when Robert and Jane finally married?
The story so far is involved and would take pages to write. I already know quite a lot so there is no point asking for help unravelling it.
If you would really like to help, there are two vital questions which you could explore for me?
Jane Hislop, Heslop, Montgomery, Murdoch, Pettigrew or whatever she was calling herself at the time, is missing from the 1861 census in both England and Scotland!! So is Robert Murdoch Montgomery 1869; acknowledged by her husband as his, but possibly Robert Murdoch's child??
Jane reappears in Jarrow in Jan. 1862 on the birth certificates of her twin daughters Sarah and Margaret. They were registered as Pettigrew, daughters of Robert Pettigrew (actually Robert Murdoch, Pettigrew was his mother's maiden name), and Jane Pettigrew formerly Heslop.
This Jane is almost certainly the runaway mother of David Montgomery 1862. from Tranent Scotland. So much points to this being so but if I could just discover her whereabouts in 1861 I think it would clinch it? So if you fancy endless look ups under all those names you might spot something I have missed. You do seem to have a facility for making unusual but accurate connections.
The other question can wait for now!!!

Carole

Carole Report 18 Sep 2008 19:27

I don't know if this helps but Sarah and Robert's next child, after the twins, was Robert Pettigrew born 27/03/1864, Square, Willington, Wallsend, Northumberland. So I suspect that they did not move down towards Durham City until later?
Carole

Carole Report 18 Sep 2008 19:37

Yes, in 1871 they are still calling themselves Pettigrew except there is a spelling variation Petticrew. They are living near Lanchester at a hamlet called Maiden Law. NW of Durham city. They have five children. Sarah and Margaret, Robert, Christopher (Kit), and Henry.
By 1881 they have changed their name to CARR and are living at 6 Hutton Terrace, WILLINGTON, Co. Durham. WHY CARR ... That is question two ... but I may never know, it isn't the sort of thing that look-ups can discover? The 1871-1881 decade is the time that David Montgomery appeared in Willington and married Elizabeth Purvis.
In 1891, although now married, they still used the name Carr on the census.

Yes that is it, 1871! ... And I have the next census records up to 1891 for Robert and Jane and to 1901 for the children as they married.
I also have the birth certificates for all the Pettigrew children and the marriage certificate for twin Sarah, who was my great grandmother.

Hi Vera
You usually come up with answers faster than I can think. Impressive stuff!!!
Judging by the time this is taking Am I right in assuming that you are hitting the same brick wall I have??
They must be somewhere??? ... and probably together? I am unsure of the date of the Census but the twins were born on Jan 3rd 1862, so Jane was almost certainly pregnant at the time of the census?
