Hi Lorraine,
It's really surprising what people remember once you start picking there brains, my own parents still throw up surprises when i talk to them now, I say "you've never told me that before" they reply "Oh, didn't I, forgot about it till so and so happened or so and so was said."
I'm not really sure now where to look for Ernest, I had hoped he'd joined the army, that's were I found Major, but no luck.
If you need me at any time just click on my name and this will send a private message directly to me.
All the best Lorraine,
Dee x

I still haven't thrown up anything on Ernest since the 1891 census, I've had a look for a birth for Emma Gatton in England, no joy.
Starting to look like an Irish search now.

Unfortunatly it is just a possible that she may have been irish, it was mentioned by relative but not by my Aunt Lilly. She has not mentioned about her parents marrying in Ireland but cant rule it out I guess.
I did think the same though, and have a look at ireland at Ulster area but nothing for Gatton or Gascoine. Could be a very long search if it is Ireland!
I really do appreciate your help on this one L x

I'm on ancestry, still can't find ernest on the 1901 census though. at least now we may have something to work on and i would say that we were prbably all wrong and James and Lillian were born Gascoines. Now lets see if we can find ernest.
just a thought, you say emma may be Irish, did Ernest go to Ireland and marry there?? If so and the twins were born there, we wouldn't find them on freebmd!!! This now is starting to look like a strong possibility.

Hi Dee
I spoke to her today and she remembers her father being around when she was 14 but believes he left her mother not long after that and doesnt know when he died.
As for Emma, I know that she was still around when my Uncle was born in 1942 but wasnt alive much after that. No-one remembers exact dates

Not sure if thats the connection, as she was deffinatley with Ernest Gascoine, or so my G.Aunt has said.
Strange though as i live in Medway!!
Just thinking if this could be an adoption or something? apparently the Gascoine were quite wealthy with hotels in Brighton and Shorham. My Aunt Lilly has said that although her and her mother (Emma) had to clean the house's my grandad was paid for private education at Archbishops Tenison School in London!!
All sounding a bit odd now?

Hi Selena,
I saw that birth, but there doesn't seem to be a match for the twins, even if Emma had married before to a Gascoine.

Hi,
Does G Aunt Lilian remember when her father and mother died? This may give us an idea of their ages if we could then find their deaths. Tricky family this one!!!
Found this but at the mo it's only guess work,

Hi,
This may confuse matters even more??
Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Sep 1921 (93%) - Cook Violet E Gatton Lewisham 1d 2360 Gatton Ernest A Cook Lewisham 1d 2360
Obviously just grasping at straws now, however could the E be for Emma??

Thank you Selena for looking, this is just becoming more of a mystery than I thought.
I will try the electoral register but not sure if that was the family home when they got married.
Didnt think I would start hitting brick walls until further back! lol

Still nothing! I can only think that you might try an electoral roll lookup for the address that James was living at when he married, or any other addresses that Lillian can remember. Might shed some light.

I have looked on various quarters for august in the years 1917 and 1918 but nothing, cant find any sets of twins born. There is a possibility that the mother wasnt married so this would make the twins a Gatton???
Thank you for looking
