Although five million soldiers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales fought in World War One, around 60 per cent of the service records for these soldiers were destroyed during a German bombing raid on the War Office in London in September 1940.

The originals for all surviving records, many badly damaged during the bombing raid, have been conserved by The National Archives and comprise the two collections to be made available online for the first time by Ancestry.co.uk, fully indexed and including original images

There are 104 George Pope's in the Medal Rolls however if he came from Edmonton North London then he most probably would have joined the Middlesex Regiment - there are 2

I have checked the Pensions & Service Records and there is nothing that jumps out there.

He was awarded the British & Victory Medals and also the 1915 Star.

He first went overseas 05th March 1915 to France.

His address where his medals were sent (he applied for them on 6th Feb 1920) was 15 Churchill Street, Winshill, Burton on Trent.

My Uncle George Ernest Lewis Russell joined the navy in 1916 at the age of 18. He signed on for twelve years but he was taken ill and died in the Royal Naval Hospital Chatham in 1924.
I found his service record on line but I wonder if you could find his medal records or anything else.
He was born in 1898 Mile End London.
His parents were Alfred and Annie Russell

There are absolutely 100's have tried to narrow the search down but its impossible. Do you know what regiment he served in as this could make it clearer.

The Naval records of Medals do not exist online that I know of. The only records that are available to me is if the Serviceman died in the war he will then be on the Rolls.

This is probably the one you have viewed online.

To avoid confusion this is the same one I asked about yesterday. Private W. Downey Royal Irish Regiment 6th Bn no. 2398 died 07/06/1917 near Ypres. He was born in Derry City. I would be very grateful for more details about him. Thanks.

I'm trying to find any information on Thomas Southern Waldon born 1891 in Willington Quay Tyneside, his father was William & mother Frances his wife was Elizabeth Clark Waldon.
He may have served in the East Kent Regt. Very grateful for any help.
