I'm with you both. I don't have the patience NOT to wait 30mins or so for a reply - especially as if it is not answered in that time it probably won't be at all as no-one knows the answer. I eagerly wait to see if a further reply has been put on a thread I have answered!

Claire

I'm with you on this one, although I will now leave my replies on for one week before I delete them. I have answered at least 10 threads today and not received one reply to my questions, if you are going to ask someone to help you the least you can do is hang around for half an hour to help, or at the very least get back to them within 24 hours. I think some people ask the questions then go on their annual holiday and hope it will all be done for them when they get back!

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask people to stay around for 1/2 hour or so after they have asked for help.

I understand that occassionally an emergancy comes up but under normal circumstances I don't think returning to a thread a week later is acceptable

Hi folks.

I quite agree in general but to delete a reply after too short a time will mean that those persons who check perhaps once a week, may not see a response.

I myself try to check at least once a day, somtimes more of course, but others may not be able to for various reasons.

Although I haven't asked much yet I am very grateful for all answers, and have said so, whatever the outcome.

I am off to bed. Will look in later. Thanks for making me feel a bit better. I am a total nerd at this thing.

I know. I have seen that on some of the threads. I would do the same once I have all that I want. I am just so slow. Some members are so quick at the searches I am amazed

Anne,

Don't feel bad about asking for help, I know it's difficult, I used to feel guilty.

Now I have the subsription I try to give some help back as I enjoy it as do a lot of other people.

As long as you give the names you have and approx years you will usually get some help but you get a lot of people who just give a name and even worse," trying to find grandfather" and nothing else.

Thanks Clare. I will try that. Sorry I did not reply Had to go to bed ,I work nights. I have not had the time lately to do much, although did find out a few new facts lately. I asked just to try and get somewhere to start from. I did not even have a date of marriage for my husbands parents. Did the usual, take the oldest child and work 5 years either side, ther was nothing. Some kind person found it as they had a sub for ancestry in the wrong years. Way wrong, so looks like I will have to join as I said before I hate asking for help. I know lots of member offer but it takes a lot to ask.

Anne don't pay the full price to Ancestry, give them a call & you should get 20% discount if you barter.

I understand that too. I am not too good at all the in and outs. I posted when I first joined genes and when I got no luck I stopped asking. I was easily put off you see. Did most of my scottish family and when it was time to do my husbands came back on the boards. Must admit I have been very surprised at the help available. But I am gong to join Ancestry as I hate asking for help

I agree that occasionally an emergency happens but we often see people who post for help, not respond & then start a new thread asking for more help.

Hi All
Just thought I would jump in here with a comment. The week before last I asked for help on one of the boards.( A new part of my hubby's family that I know little about) Just after I posted it we had a family emergency and had to dash away. Computer shut down and off we went. Came back on Friday, first thing I did after unpacking was go to Genes and see if anyone had replied, they had. I posted and explained and thanked them. I did not even think till later that they would wonder where I was. There was I, going along merrily, thinking I had time to myself. How wrong can you be! At least the answers were still there that I wanted.

lancashireAnn Report 11 Jul 2008 10:07

another tip Danielle is when you put up a request is to use the 'bookmark this' in the yellow box. When you ask to show 'my bookmarks' it will then only show the ones you have bookmarked and not all the ones you may have replied to which are shown under 'my threads'. Useful if you tend to look at others just for interest and reply to them.
