Sarah So pleased that the information was what you were looking for. When I get to the Registrars Office I can look up their marriage certificate and get all the details from it. I've got to go back to the Archive tomorrow so I'll look for children then. Pam

Hello Pam
Just seen your thread. My husbands grandparents came from St Helier. Are you still available to do look ups, please. If so, would you be able to find the marriage of Ellen Hubert and George Francis Hamon, possibly just after the 1901 census. Ellen is living at home on the 1901 census.
If you are able to find our grandparents, would it be possible to have the number of their marriage certificate, please, so that we can send for it. Many thanks

Hello Sarah There were 15 children born in St Helier with the surname Ryan in roughly the right time frame. When I get to the Registrars Office and get the exact date of their wedding I should be able to eliminate a few. Keep you posted Pam

Hi Pam,
You kindly gave me valuable info. on my St Helier origins of the family yesterday ,& hope that you don't think that I have a cheek asking for your help again.
I have been trying for about 5 years to get further back on the LeCras & Coutanche family.
Thomas LeCras c.1893 & Marie Coutanche c.1893 were my 3Xgt.grandparents,but have been unable to find their marriage(probably between 1810-1815).
As the children were all born in St.Helier,I should imagine their marriage took place there as well. Please could you tell me if their marriage would have any reference to their parentage, eg.fathers names which would help in further research.
I hope you don't mind me asking for your help again.
Regards, Eunice

Hi Una I'll gladly give it a go but can you just clarify the dates.
Were they born c1893 or should it read 1793? Or is it the other way round - they were born c1893 and married c1910, not 1810?
Also if you can give me some names and dates for the children it would help to verify that I have the right couple - assuming I can find them. Pam
Edit Forget all that I just found them in the 1841 so I've got a better idea of what I'm looking for

Carol There are no Schofields at all on the 1871 Jersey census. I will see if I can find the birth of Peter John next time I'm at the Archive. There were a lot of soldiers stationed here at that time, many of them Irish so it is quite likely that the father was a military man. Pam

Morning Sarah In the Register dated 1/8/1891 - 29/12/1892 there is indeed a John Henry and an Amelia Norah, I'll check their exact dates next week, there is also a Kathleen a year or so later which might be worth checking.
All the best
Pam

Hello Una According to St Helier parish records Thomas Le Cras and Marie Coutanche married 2/4/1814. Unfortunately their parents don't get a mention!
There was a Marie Coutanche baptised 18/9/1791, also in St Helier, parents Philippe Coutanche and Elizabeth Renouf, but it would be pure speculation to say that she was yours. I couldn't find a Thomas baptised in St Helier in the right time frame.
I don't think poor Marie had time to draw breath because she actually had 14 children, sadly at least 9 and possibly 10 of them died.
Baptisms 2/12/1814 Mary 14/9/1817 Elizabeth (godfather William Much!) 2/1/1820 Thomas Jean - who may be one of the deaths below as 2 John's were shown 26/5/1821 Esther burial 20/6/1824 4/8/1822 John poss burial 11/11/1823 or 9/4/1824 7/11/1823 Nancy burial 23/6/1824 7/11/1823 Philippe burial 13/6/1824 26/2/1825 Esther Elizabeth 27/4/1826 Anne burial 4/7/1826 12/8/1826 Sophie Charlotte burial 3/9/1827 16/11/1828 Rachel Susanne burial ?/11/1829 1 year 4/7/1830 Peter burial ?/8/1830 - 6 weeks 24/11/1833 Leonore burial ?/1/1834 - 6 weeks 3/5/1835 Eliza burial 21/10/1835 - 6 months
Makes quite depressing reading doesn't it - I know infant mortality was high back then but to lose that many must have been unimaginably awful.
I'll see if I can find anything else out about the family next week. I also have all the names of the godparents if you want them.

Hi Pam,
I cannot thank you enough for all the information.. How sad it was for the whole family to lose so many children.
Marie is living with surviving son Thomas, aged 31 in 1851-HO/107/2527/81/2,she is then a widow.
So the details of Thomas senior's birthplace & actual year of birth will unfortunately remain unknown. I would like details of godparents please, maybe they will reveal other family connection clues
On the MC of Elizabeth Jane Much, dated 1864 Middlesex( illegit. daughter of Elizabeth 1817) Father is named as William Much, a baker...
I'm so grateful to you.
Thankyou again, Eunice .

Hi Pam,
Thankyou for the list of godparents, it is a great help
I will search to see how many of the names are still around in the early census to see if any possible family connections appear.(Time to put my Hercule Poirot hat on).
Thanks to you I feel as though the Channel Islands brick wall is beginning to crumble at last.. This part of my tree has been a long mystery,as Elizabeth (1817) turns up in 1851 in Kent,UK with husband & 2 step?children ,all born in St Helier. But that's another story I wont burden you with..(I've nicnamed them The Paracetamol part of the family)..
Thankyou again Pam, Regards, Eunice

Hi Pam, please could you have a look for a Jane Ray born 1840. The family were living in the Grouville Parish on the 1841 census. On all the other census she says she was born in Jersey. On the 1841 it says england but I haven't found a birth or baptism in England yet!! Thank you
