Norman Ayton in the Australia, World War I Service Records, 1914-1920 Name: Norman Ayton Age: 26 Birth Year: abt 1888 Birth Place: Sydney, New South Wales Dossier Year Range: 1914-1920 Enlistment Place: Holsworthy, New South Wales Spouse: Sarah Ayton
Occupation: painter. Address: 6 Richard Ave., Newtown, Sydney. Height: 5ft 5.5 ins. Fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair.
There's a Statutory Declaration dated 10 Sept 1915:
He declared:.
"a) that my wife having left me about two years ago, and I have not contributed anything for the last twelve months towards her support prior to my joining the Australian Imperial Forces.
b) and that I am about to prepair [ sic ] a legal separation order which when complete a copy will be forwarded to the Military Authorities."
A medical report dated 9 Aug 1915 says he was a scenic painter. His disability was weakness of ankles, and varicocele of left testicle. The disability [ the ankle weakness ] originated 2.5 years previously in Melbourne, when "turning a double somersault over a [something] wire at a pantomime & sprained both ankles" with the result that he was (in 1915) "unable to walk properly". The Board subsequently examined him and discharged him as unfit for Military Service because of the varicocele. No mention of the ankles.

No father's name given for Jennette, but in the "father's name" column it says Jennette Maude Johnson. Don't know if that's her mother's name and she was born illegitimately, or if it's her own previous name put in by mistake. In the column for father's occupation it says "blacksmith".
Marital status for both Norman and Jennette is "Divorced. Petitioner."

Thank you all for your help and research. I am back on here after quite a few years - too much happening in my current life without wondering about past lives. I was recently driving through the Werris Crek / Quirindi area of NSW and I started thinking about the whys etc about their lives. I had forgotten about the things I had posted in the past and therefore your replies which I really appreciated. I will have to start from scratch again and follow up all the leads you have sent me, maybe entering the names and dates into the family tree and working backward. I had a lot of information from an elderly relative who has since passed away so have no idea whether it is factual or folklore Once again, thankyou for your interest Cheers Shirley

Hi Julie, this is where it gets a bit tricky. Nana Patto - Sarah was my paternal grandmother. She was married to a Percival Herbert Ayton approx 1908, then again to my grandfather approx 1915. but that is doubtful as family goss. has it Percival did a runner and couldn't be found for divorce purposes, so Nan and Pop (Harold Henry Pattison) did the unthinkable and unmentionable and "lived in sin", manufacturing "wedding dates" etc. I had quite a problem finding my father's birth cert. He was the oldest of their children - Allan Henry Pattison - but his b/cert had family name as Ayrton and Pattison was listed as one of his Christain names. He changed it in mid sixties. His family is full of little mysteries like this - I asked Mum and Dad (both deceased now) about them, but as per the standards of their age group, skeletons were kept where they belonged - in the cupboard. I love a good mystery so I am poking around gleaning information here and there hopefully to put it all together Cheers ... Shirley

Julie and Christine Thank you both very much for the Cole information you were kind enough to share with me. Being fairly new to this geneology thing, it's a bit of a daunting task trying to find family info prior Henry and Jane travelling to Aust. Their daughter Sarah was my paternal Grandmother - she was an only child, I believe a twin died at birth, but thats another search again, whether it be fact or otherwise remains to be seen. Thanks again Shirley
