The other thing you could do is get James' birth cert. This will give you Walter's first "wife's" name assuming he made to the altar at least once!
It could be that wife 1 was still alive which would explain why we can't find a second marriage

Thanks for that Claire. I will get the birth certificate but feel I am one step ahead of myself lol.

Certainly looks as though Walter and Elizabeth didnt marry even though William's birth cert suggests they did.

I have found a likely death of James King from Walter's first marriage when he was aged 4.

Claire I kept going back as I wanted to make sure that Walter was born Walter King. Looks very much as though he was

Thanks for the 51 Claire. It certainly looks as if this Walter is the same man though the censuses. Just wish I could prove it was my great x 2 grandfather. Do you think this is one of those instances where you have to go with 98% rather than 100% evidence?

The sister with strange name is who Walter is with on the 71 census in Brightside Sheffield. I thought it said Carol lol. I have just seen a marriage later in 71 of a Cora King. A good chance that is Coray.

think i have him on the 71 census as well. He is living with his unmarried sister who is head of household. Just the two of them. He is down as Walter Ring again but born 1851c Huddersfield...again, a moulder. Living Brightside, Sheffield.

All this points to the same Walter but I dont know if I should claim him as my ancestor without being able to prove it with no marriage details to Elizabeth.

Bluesavannah Report 10 Jun 2008 19:18

ive just had a look in the 61 census and there is a Walter King born 1851c with parents. States he is born Almondbury and the address he is living at is Parkgate......the Parkgate bit would tie in with the 81 birth place.

I really dont know Huddersfield so not sure if Almondbury is near there or Parkgate in Huddersfield and Berry Brow.

Bluesavannah Report 10 Jun 2008 19:04

oh, i didnt know that. Many thanks for that info, that would make sense then with the 1891 census saying he was born in Huddersfield.

It doesnt suprise me that Walter would have been married before as he was quite abit older than Elizabeth. Wonder if there is a possibility that Walter wasnt actually widowed and was still married to the first wife and thats why there is no marriage to Elizabeth?

I appreciate everyones help.

Hi Rutland,

ooooh that looks very interesting! Its a highly likely possibility but means Elizabeth wasnt Walter's first wife (thats if they married lol). And a son James? The moulder bit certainly fits as well.

Another possible birth place, this time Parkgate in Rotherham. So, he could be born Parkgate, Huddersfield or Sheffield if this is the same guy.

Many thanks for that, have noted the details for reference.

Hi Rutland Belle

yes thats the family on the 91 census. I am almost 100% sure these are my family but I dont want to claim them without some proof.

Walter is listed as a moulder on William's birth and baptism records and also William's marriage certificate.

My nan (William's daughter) doesnt remember much about her family but said her dad never really knew his father and mother as he wasnt very old when both his parents died. Nan remembers her dad telling her that her dad would have been taken to an orphanage but his older brother, Ernest, wouldnt allow that and took him in.

As there is an Ernest on the 1901 census, makes me think this is them.

I have found a death of a Walter King in 1923 aged 73 which would fit in with a birth around 1850 which the censuses indicate also.

Hi Claire

I hadnt thought of that. I have tried freebmd just now for a Ring/Rowland marriage and nothing has come up. I will give a full trawl of the indexes a go though as its a possible idea.

Thank you for that. Claire

Hi yes, thats them.

On the 1891 census, it says Walter is born Huddersfield and Elizabeth in Rotherham. Obviously, i dont know which, if any, are right.

The other children were registered as King although Walter appears to have Ring on most of the census. It's possible that the name was changed from Ring to King, have you looked for Ring marriages?

Hi Sam

If I have the right couple on census, then it looks like their first child was called Eliza King born 1886c in Sheffield. On the 1891 Census (mistranscribed as Ring) Walter is 40 and Elizabeth is 26. They have Eliza and then Albert who was born in 1890.
