Have found a Jewish records site that was quite informative but not found any matches yet....

Hi Lisa

Re Divorces, it's the National Archives site you want and they are the J77 records in the catalogue. Their is one for a Harry Kausman 1937.

Hello LFW,

thanks a lot for that!,

I have already got the divorce in 1937, but if someone has been divorced would it definitely be on that site do you know?

We are looking into the possiblity that Harry Gordon Kausman who has been married three times, never actually got divorced from his 2nd wife Margaret Martin, before he married his third wife Joan Welbourn in 1949....do you, or anyone know of anyway of finding out??

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Lisa

The quick answer is I don't know. Not all divorce records survived and in later years I believe that only a few were kept. I found this on the National Archives website, it might be worth ringing them to see if they can advise you where else to look.

Between 1858 and 1927 almost all divorce files survive. Between 1928 and 1937, the 80% of suits that were filed in the Central Registry are in J 77. The 20% of suits that were filed in the new district registries were destroyed (they are not indexed by J 78). After 1938, very few survive
Many files contain marriage certificates. Later files (after 1938) may contain photographs.

I wonder if they would be kept by the solicitors but how you would track them down I don't know.
