Hi John

thanks for that link

drawings that I've seen in other publications show that the women were usually at most only half-dressed when they were pullling the carts underground.

http://www.hoodfamily.info/docs/colliersloft/newtoncolliersloft.html

These two links make interesting reading.

"An Act of Parliament, prohibiting the employment of women and girls in mines and collieries, regulating the employment of boys, and making other provisions relating to persons working therein, was passed on 10th August, 1842.

In order in some degree to afford time for preparing for the change, it allowed female apprentices under the age of 18 to continue at their usual occupation below ground for three months, and all other females for six months. Accordingly it was not until the 1st of March, 1843, that, it became unlawful for any owner of any mine or colliery "to employ any female person whatsoever within any mine or colliery, or to allow or permit any female person to work or be therein."

The common practice in Scotland had been that the females were not employed immediately by the proprietors, but by their men. "

From the 17 names on the two decorative boards, 3 are my ancestors, 4 are their brothers and 2 more brothers in law.

Sylvia - On the Adams link there is a drawing of a woman pulling the coal bogie underground.

Is it any worse than housework today? Bah humbug!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Mar 2011 23:15

It is indeed ......... especially as some of the books I've read say that the women's job was to pull carts underground

ie, rather like horses!

Agreed, Sylvia. Hard to imagine though, isn't it, in the 1840's?

41 census doesn't give much info, no relationships and ages of those over 15 are rounded down to nearest 5 or 0.
1841 census
Butcher's Row, Haswell, Durham
Michael Thorlaway, 55, coal miner
Elizabeth, 53
Margaret, 30, coal miner?
Robert, 20, coal miner
Maria, 18
Dorthey, 16
Michel, 14,
Barbary, 12
Will'm, 2
All born in county.
There's a ditto mark under occupation for Margaret signifying that she was a coal miner. I doubt it but...
Also looks like the enumerator didn't follow the rounding down instruction. Not all of them did.

Thanks Madbull and Ozibird. that's a great help.

Any chance of a fuller return on the 1841 census too?
Your help is much appreciated.

Ralph is a coal miner in 1851, too.

Yes, Margaret is definitely 30 on that 1841 census.

1871 census
Haswell, Durham
Ralph Richardson, head, widower, 47, coal miner
Matthew, son, 20, coal miner
Elizabeth, dau, 18
Michael, son, 15, coal miner

MargaretM Report 6 Mar 2011 19:47

I disagree with the 1851 census as posted for Barbara Richardson. William Hann is a visitor and Dorthy Hann is wife of visitor not wife's sister.

Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid a couple of queries have arisen.

I would be grateful for full census information for the 1841, 1851 and 1871 returns recently provided on this thread.
Please include relationship, occupation and place of birth.

In the 1841 census for the Thirlaway family it shows Margaret as 50.
I gather it should be 30. She's the eldest daughter.

In the 1871 census for the Richardson family, I gather that 3 year old Barbara is the grandaughter, not the daughter, as presumed since the relationship is not on the thread.

Thanks

John.
Confirmation of this will widen the period for the death of Barbara Richardson nee Thirlaway, to 1864 - 1871, once again.

Hi Ozbird

Thanks for that. It was so obvious that I missed it.
There is a Barbara Greener of similar age on the 1881 census, but she is the grandaughter.
Barbara b1867, is not with her father in 1881.

This Barbara is not included in any of my earlier research or sharing of trees, so I guess I was not looking for her. In addition some trees have the grandaughter as Barbara Richardson......I wonder!
Thanks for the birth details.

Chrisa and Midlands Margaret have confirmed Barbara Thirlaway b1828's death:
Deaths Dec 1870
Richardson Barbara 44 Stockton 10a91.

Thanks to all of you for your help

John

Ozibird Report 26 Feb 2011 19:13

As young Barbara is 3 years old, it narrows her death to 1867 - 1871

Births Dec 1867
Richardson Barbara Jane Easington 10a 369

Thanks for the 1871 census too.

Narrows the window of Barbara's death to years between 1864 and 1871.

Thanks

Chrisa

Well done, reckon that's her.
Father - Michael Thirlaway 1783, mother - Elizabeth Kellot 1787.

That's a great start,

thanks
