Can anyone help solve this puzzle, PLease.
George Wernham 1814-1840. married Diana Simms 1809-1894 m.in 1834.
Martha Wernham her daughter married William Lambourne, no date. They had 10 children.
William Lambourne then married Diana Simms in 1843 and had 3 children.
I have got all this from IGI.
I think they were all born in Chieveley, Berkshire but some married and died in Salt Lake City.
Could he have married his Mother in Law or did the mormons have multiple marriages. I presume they became Mormons!
Thanking you in advance.
Puzzled

It could be that that Diana William married may have been a cousin of his wife's?

Also some of those are submitted records so may not be correct anyway!

Besides if the marriage was down as Diana Simms- if it was his mother in law - it would be down as Wernham.

Plus if Martha was born after her parents married in 1834 and had 10 children with William, then the William who married Diana in 1843 cant be the same person?

Have you looked for them on the censuses?

The dates are the same for William Lambourne who married daughter and Mother!! 17 Feb 1823 - 3 July 1887.

I have just asked the question on one of the online Ask sites The response that was sent to my mobile is below

Mormons no longer allow their members to have more than one wife. In 1890 polygamy was renounced and now anyone who practises it is excommunicated.

So from that I gather that in the 1840's when you need to know about multiple marriage was indeed practised.

HI Mrs Tibbetts!!

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 19 Mar 2008 15:22

Multiple marriages were not allowed in the UK even if you were a practising mormon.

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 19 Mar 2008 15:25

I'm guessing that the marriage to Diana was first - perhaps he had his wicked way with her daughter and then he and Diana separated and he took up with Martha and had 9 more kids?

chrisa

chrisa Report 19 Mar 2008 15:33

You're totally right Mrs Tibbetts.

i thought Francoise had said in her original post that they had married in Salt Lake City but I see she actually said some of them did.

Think I best get some glasses.
Good job I've got this helmet on(slapping of head)

Well the info is from the IGI - it gives Alfred as being the child of William and Martha - so I would be more inclined to say that he took a shine to his stepdaughter - which is a bit yuck as she was only about 8 when he married her mother...

Do you want to borrow my icepack?

Francoise

Francoise Report 19 Mar 2008 15:38

Why have I got William Lambourne married to Martha and Diana? Martha was only 14 when she had Alfred!
Even more puzzled!!

OK - I bite my tongue - because looks like William may have done his multiple marriage in Utah - as he wouldn't have been able to do it in the UK!
