Hi Paula, I wish to find either William Sparks or William J Spark on the 1851 census. His death information says he was born circa 1829 in London UK. Can you help please?

Best Wishes,
Derek

Hi Paula

Please could you look for 1871 census info on William Thomas Stobbart born 1861 in South Shields. or 1861 for his mother Isabella
I have this for 1881.

104 Maxwell St Westoe, Durham, England

Isabella STOBBART Head W Female 49 Whickham, Durham, England Plain Sewer (Seamstress)
William STOBBART Son U Male 20 So Shields, Durham, England Glassmaker (Unemployed)
Robert STOBBART Son Male 12 So Shields, Durham, England Errand Boy
James CANSFIELD Son Male 2 So Shields, Durham, England
James CANSFIELD Boarder U Male 37 Sunderland, Durham, England Cartman

There seems to be quite a few Stobbarts in the area. I (for some strange reason) had been looking at the wrong family for a while. It may turn out that they are related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike and leanne,

This could be another sibling - there is no other records on IGI - I have also looked for a marriage for Cath, Katherine, Catherine Berry and Henry Hyatt and there is no information either.

Regards, Paula

He was a John Brownlee, also born Ireland c 1863. His parents were Margaret (born c 1839) and William Brownlee. Margaret died a widow at her sister Sarah's house in 1903, albeit was not there in 1901 census.

Paula

Paula Report 4 Mar 2008 22:39

Margaret,

They certainly do keep you guessing - my great grandfather's birth certificate has him as (surname) fiddler, his Marriage Certificate as a Childs and he also called himself Spendlove (which was his mother's maiden name). That one took me some time to sort out - my gran (who's 93 only told me I was right after researching for years!!) - great arn't they.

I cannot find anything for Robert or Sarah born 1850 or 1849 on the 1881 census, but if you want to give me the cousins name I can have another look.

Yes thanks, have most of the Irish stuff - it is Sarah's family, the Lilleys, where my main interest lies. Rosetta's mum was a Lilley and her mum's sister, Sarah's aunt, also married a Brownlee! They confused us at every turn.

Thanks, Paula, I've been at this hobby for a good few years now and I know all about ancestors turning up in strange places and with strange name spellings - they certainly like to keep us guessing.

Paula

Paula Report 4 Mar 2008 22:24

Margaret,

I assume you have this... It seems to tally as in the 1901 census Rosetta is living with her mother, father and Sarah Lilley who is her neice.

Margaret,

Will have a look for you - I definitely cannot find anything for Brownlees, Brownlee or Brownlie in the 1881 census - so its a strong possibility that they came over just after the 1891 census which isn't strictly unusual and Rosetta came over first with her sister. But I will keep checking as sometimes they come up in a different place as to where you expect them to be.

Mmm, certainly the occupation fits as she is noted as a tailoress at 1901. It is possible her family were still in Ireland at 1891. Don't recall her having a sister Annie, but then again I may not have tracked down all the children in Ireland.

Certainly sounds a contender. Will keep the details, thanks.

Just a thought, could you have a look under Dumbartonshire for her parents as I have found one of her cousins with an address there in 1903 (on a death certificate)?
