Hello

Still searching for my O'Callaghans. This time I am wondering if someone can find the marriage of Henry O'Callaghan and Margaret O'Brien and their deaths please. They had a son Henry Francis O'Callaghan born 1855 in Lexton VIC.

Thank you

Cherilyn

Hi Danielle

I reckon this is the right marriage, without the O's!

Surname: CALLAGHAN
Given Names: Henry
Event: M
Spouse Surname: BRIEN
Spouse Gvn Names: Margaret
Year: 1852
Reg Number: 1341
Denomination: ROMAN CATHOLIC
Parish: ST FRANCIS, MELBOURNE
Fiche: 711

Fits with this birth of Hy as CALLAGHAN:

Surname: CALLAGHAN
Given Names: Henry
Event: B
Father: Hy
Mother: Margaret OBRIEN
Birth Place: AVOCA
Year: 1855
Reg Number: 11803

This couple had a number of chn, including 3 born in Lexton, but all as CALLAGHAN.

Looking at siblings marriages it does look like they added an O as well.

Let me know if you would like details of the other chn. :-)

This might be the father's death:

Surname: OCALLAGHAN
Given Names: Henry
Event: D
Father: Unknown
Age: 52
Birth Place: CORK
Year: 1872
Reg Number: 10168

or

Surname: CALLAGHAN
Given Names: Henry
Event: D
Father: Robert
Mother: Johanna
Age: 42
Birth Place: CORK
Year: 1862
Reg Number: 1363

(latter Hy died of heart disease, living in Moonee Ponds, farmer)

and Margaret's death? (If age at death is correct it would mean she was 14 when she married, not unusual for the times tho I guess):

Surname: OCALLAGHAN
Given Names: Margt
Event: D
Father: Obrien Pat
Mother: Unknown UNKNOWN
Age: 60
Death Place: Geelong
Year: 1898
Reg. Number: 12159

Hope this helps, the marriage cert should be very useful!

Cheers
Cherilyn

Thanks heaps Cherilyn

I think this would be them and the death cert should confirm as it should list the children. But I also wonder if they might have passed away in South Australia which is where their son Henry later moved to.

Thanks again

Danielle

Hello all,

I'm post here as from what I can gather, Henry and Margaret would be my great-great-great grandparents.

Michael Davitt (Mick) O'Callaghan is was my great grandfather. His father, Henry Francis O'Callaghan, I believe was one of Henry and Margaret O'brien's children.

I'd love to connect with anyone who may be able to help with my searching and information, as to me I really want evidence and documentation pertaining to Henry Callaghan.

I'm very interested in Henry O'Callaghan/Henry Callaghan. The English made the Irish drop the O' which denoted 'Descendant of' as part of a broader strategy to suppress Irish identity and integrate the population into English norms. It was also done to assist in emgiration to other countries, like Australia to avoid discrimination. Though, you'll note the O' is added back quite quickly, showing they were likely accepted by the Aussies and were considered all round good people haha.

Well you should also check here: https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/callaghan/henry/48455

Where you will note this convict history matches our Henry, which you may or may not already know. This would explain the move from Ireland to Australia.. for stealing 2 fouls..

I'm trying to find documentation of this Henry, definitely being the Father of who I believe was also named Henry Francis O'Callaghan, born 1855 who married Louisa Mary Franklin.

My Family are the O'Callaghans, and none of them know this most interesting of history. I'd love to let them know, but I won't do it without the utmost certainty.

Any help is kindly appreciated,
Thanks,
David
