Hi Cathy,
Yes, happy to help if I can, and I should imagine Potty and Margaret who both made the breakthrough on 1881 and 1871 would too.
I see that the 1871 info they both posted towards the foot of page 1 shows that the first three children were all girls (Eliza Ann, Mary Jane and Susannah), and that the eldest son is William Henry. Is the Susannah name unusual for this time and place, or quite frequent then?

Hi Ivy as promised I am just letting you know I got the cert. for Caroline and NO she is not `ours` the couple on the census with her is a different James and Mary Anne. Well at least thats sorted and eliminated them and I won`t be following a line thats not ours. I am grateful for your help. So Elizabeth was their first child, and according to their marriage certificate their fathers are both William. Now I was told that there was a possibility that James was the illigitimate child of Elizabeth and that she later married someone called William !! I had just put this on one side a while ago because I had no way of tying it in to James, until now because it seems likely to me that they would name their first child after one of their parents. I still have much work to do on this branch of our family so I will probably need help again and hope you won`t mind me asking if needs be. my warmest wishes to you all who have tried to help me already cathy

Hi Ivy Thankyou for that,no I haven`t spotted her either, but I am interested in finding out if that Caroline who married William Jones could be her. I have my doubts about Caroline being James and Mary Annes daughter so I have sent for the cert. for the birth reg. you found for me yesterday. There is such a big gap between Caroline and their next child Elizabeth b 1858, and they did not marry until 1859, and not in Mon. but Bristol . Thankyou again cathy

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for feedback, it's always fascinating to know how the research develops. I found the Nickles registration by asking Ancestry for Caro* Nic*l*s between 1848 and 1852 in Monmouthshire in Wales. I can't find her though after 1851 (not census, death or even marriage as yet) - have you spotted her anywhere?

Hi Help again please, I am going round in circles!!!! Can someone try to find a birth record for Caroline Nicholas b.1850 monmouth, (according to the 1851 census records-wales). Parents James and Mary Anne Nicholas (nee Wood) I had been searching for the birth of james and while doing so I have found him on 1841 census (wales) but then on 1851 I also found mary anne(wife) and daughter Caroline(as stated) can`t find him on 1861 but on 1871 census I found him again but there is no mention of Caroline. I have tried looking for a marriage for her,and even a death but cannot find one. The dates don`t match up for what I have found and I really need a better brain than mine. thanks cathy Potty i got a lot of information from the sites you gave me,but it`s opened up a whole lot more questions and confusion!! and it would seem my james may well be illigitimate.

This site has lots of parish records for Monmouthshire. There are some there for St Woollos - and an offer to do lookups for those not yet added. You have to join a yahoo group?
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monfamilies/monprts.htm.
Try googling Monmouthshire parish records - there are quite a few links.

Catherine
Civil registration started in 1837 - before that you will need to search parish records. Have you tried the IGI on www.familysearch.org?
