Many thanks for the good advice - Looks like i will be making a trip to the local records office and check this out - I do know that some of the Marsdens were buried at Weaste cemetry Salford - Is there a way to find out on line if any of mine are in there ?

If he did change his name (and birth year) to take part in WW1, then maybe Alexander was the assumed name and he was really born something else...

Doesnt help much I know, but something to bare in mind.

You can check old electoral rolls at an archive / record office or main library local to that address.
There are none for war years.
Only people eligible to vote, ie over 21 and registered would be listed....and no women in the early years.

Maybe get in touch with the local library/Records Office and ask if they could do an electrol roll lookup for the address? Maybe five years previous to the marriage date to see who was living there (and old enough to vote), maybe there will be some other family members.

Electrol rolls wheren't take during war years so those are out.

Joanne

Joanne Report 4 Feb 2008 00:39

Jill
I have heard of Alexander Ross before, could we check to see if his father was indeed Edward Mardsen ?

Sylvia
If it is the same one born in Brighton would we be able to check if his father was Edward ?

P.s You have made me think of something my grandfather once told me about Alexander : Something like he went to war - I presume WW1 and was too young so kept his surname but changed 1st name...

I think you may be right - i have been chasing my tail on this one for 3 years!!

Gladys could be a relative of Alexanders - I hadent thought of that.

Gladys has to be older than the daughter born in 1925 ...... the wedding was in 1923, and a witness has to be old enought to understand what is going on.

I did look on the 1901 for a Gladys masden born ca 1890 to 1910, with brother/relation Alexander or father Edward .......... no luck

I think he might have told porkies either about his age and/or about his father!

Problem is ..... we don't even know where he was born! There is an Alexander Marsden born in Brighton, butthis Alexander gets married in Barton Irwell in Lancashire. Are they the same one???

who knows!

Joanne,
just a thought, ive found Henrietta birth its 1900 Barton I.

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 4 Feb 2008 00:27

Joanne, I think you've been staring at the screen too long... :D

If the marriage took place in 1923, then their daughter (b1925) couldnt have been a witness.

Its more probable that the witness Gladys was a sister or cousin or aunt ect.

I took a look at the WW1 records on ancestry for Alexander, as he would be around the right age to be involved in the fighting but havent seen anything so far.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 4 Feb 2008 00:25

Alexander married in 1923.
We are looking for a witness of at least 14 I would have thought....although some on GR have mentioned younger witnesses.

I think Gladys is likely to be a sister or at least relative of Alexander.
