Ah, thanks.

I had tried that and did wonder why it said 'start tying name of contact' - now I know!

MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS ANDREW LOGAN, BUT LIKE YOU I CANNOT TRACE HIM BACK BEYOND 1798. MY GRANDFATHER, BORN 1840 IN ST.BEES, WAS JOHN LOGAN WHO JOINED THE ROYAL HORSEGUARDS AND SERVED FOR 30 YEARS. HE MARRIED LAURA JONES WHO DIED ,NO DATE KNOWN, BUT HE THEN REMARRIED A WIDOW, MARTHA WILLIAMS (NEE BAKER) AND THEY HAD TWIN BOYS, ONE OF WHOM DIED AT BIRTH, AND THE SURVIVING TWIN WAS MY FATHER, ALSO JOHN BORN IN HACKNEY LONDON IN 1892 -DIED IN 1974 IN CHRISTCHURCH). MY GRANDFATHER JOHN LOGAN DIED IN 1932 AND IS BURIED IN CHINGFORD CEMETERY. I REALISED WAS BORN IN STRATFORD EAST LONDON IN FEB 1927 (NOW 91 YEARS OF AGE) THIS DOESN'T THROW LIGHT ON ANDREW LOGAN BUT IT DOES LINK PART OF THE FAMILY FROM ST.BEES. I HAVE BEEN TO THE CHURCH IN ST BEES AND LOOKED AT SEVERAL CHURCH RECORDS, BUT COULD'NT FIND ANY MENTION OF ANDREW.

Trying to find find relatives of Thomas Logan (1836 Cumberland - 1897 Dunedin).

Father was Andrew (1805 Cumberland) and mother was Mary Allison (Workington Cumberland). I have no information on his siblings, Robert (1831) Henry (1832) James (1837) Andrew (1838) George (1839) and Septimus (1840)

He had four sons. My great great great Grandfather was Allie Logan (1868 Marrar NSW) but I am trying to find his brothers. Robert (1881 Ballarat) and Harald (1888 Wollongong). Their mother was Mary McGregor (1830). Thomas also had a son George (1871) to Mary Ann Partridge (C1856).

Any information would be fantastic.

Quick history on what I know of Thomas: was born in Cumberland at St Bees Hospital. Thomas arrived in Melbourne, Australia in 1861 at the age of 25. He came to Australia to principally build railway lines, but as a large labour force was required he couldn't commence as the most able body men were in the gold fields.

In 1862 he went to Dunedin in New Zealand where he eventually struck gold. He had four gold mines near Cromwell which is in the Otage district and became extremely wealthy.

He spent 18 years in New Zealnd before returning to Australia. At the height of his wealth he was in his early fourties and still single. He owned three large hotels and many race horses over there.

He had an illegitimate son to a young girl named Mary Ann Partridge, the child was named George Logan.

In 1879 he returned to Melbourne where he met 20 year old Mary McGregor. Thomas and Mary were married in the Catholic Church at Emerald Hill on 13th January 1881. She was then 22 and he was 45. They had three sons Robert Thomas born at Ballarat in 1881, Allison at Wollongong in 1884 and Harald Gladstone in 1888.

Thomas has had many achievements - he was involved in the Zig Zag railway in the blue mountains, he also worked the spiral railway lin in the Dandenong Ranges was one of the contractors who built the railway line from Sydney to Wollongong which began on the 12th January 1884. The line was to be completed by 1886 but was extended because of unforseen problems as much of the south coast of NSW was still un-explored.

The line was eventually completed on the 9th November 1887 at the cost of 513,000 pound. Thomas also owned stone quaries which much of the blue stone was used to form the line from which he made a very hansome profit. He also had extensive interests in several coal mines in the Wollongong area. Thomas owned a steam locomotive which was called "The Gladstone".

Thomas died in dunedin on the 12th August 1897.
