Looking for first wife of Herbert John Prothero

I'm looking for the first wife of my Grandfather - Herbert John Prothero (b. Sept 1888, d. June 1960). He married my Grandmother - Sylvia Vallis (in Jan. 1941)... though he's listed on the marriage certificate as David Prothero (at some point, he started to be called by this name... which, confusingly enough was also the name of one of his brothers (b. 1880) - indeed, the death certificate also calls him David.

Anyway, his first child (Leonard Prothero) with my nan was born in 1922, but I know he was still married to his first wife at this point (I suppose they may never have divorced - which may explain why he changed his name when he married my nan).

Anyhow, it's possible that the person he married was a lady called Catherine (Kate) A Hannigan/Heneghan (b. c' 1891, Ballina, New South Wales). Catherine had 3 husbands including Herbert (though I don't know what order they came in as I don't have dates). The other husbands were Francis H Osborne and a Mr Huggett.

I haven't been able to find the details of Herberts first wife - and there's no guarantee that the wedding took place in the UK as Herbert spent a few years in Canada and the US. Can anyone help to point me in the right direction?

If it helps, I think they had a son together (unknown name) and that the son married Loretta Katherine Peters who died in 1975 in Montana. Catherine Hannigans parents were John Lynch Hannigan and Sarah C McLoughlin.
