Help! I am trying to trace my great great grandparents, Conrad & Dorette Jahns . My great grandfather, Conrad Henry Frederick Jahns came from Germany. I have no idea how he came over but he appears on the 1891 census as Fritz Jahns aged 31 and a gardener in Dorset. He is married to Mary Denman Greeves from Norfolk. The family bible says that he was born in 1859 in Bischofshoberdam, Gleidingen, Hannover. He became a British Subject and changed his name to Johns. My great Aunt was the only one to keep in touch with the german side of the family and when she died, all her address books and things were thrown out. This side of my family were very tight-lipped and the only info I have comes from the family bible which isn't much help! I have no idea how to trace german ancestors so any help and pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. |
