Ruth Edith Hunt was born 1862, Kings Green, Redmarley Glocs.
She married Edwin Harper. they had two sons and a daughter.
They eventually end up in Portsmouth - 1901 census.
The daughter Marion, born April 1904 was "given away" and there are no adoption records. We know who the adoptive parents were.
When Marion was born, Ruth was 42 and had sons F 17 and L 12. She had had a 79 year old mother in law with her until the year before Marion was born - who ended her days in "the assuylum" so poor Ruth must have been pretty worn out.
Maybe ill, maybe heartbroken?? Would have expected her to die soon after the birth.
When he was a mature man one of the sons told a grand-daughter that he got home and his parents had "gone".
This must have been between 1904 and 1906. He joined the Navy as his brother had done some time before. They did not mention the baby sister but that does not mean they did not know about her.
We have looked for Ruth's death from the birth of the daughter Marion, 4th April 1904 for to 1962 (when Ruth would be 100) and concentrated on up to 1911 when her husband appears in 1911 census - Edwin Harper - alone as a lodger.
He is described as "married" - not as a widower.

Did she "run away with sailor "- hardly likely at age 42 - or is the case as I think -- "he did the old girl in" , and that is why he/they disappeared so the sons could ask no questions???

Edwin Harper worked in the dockyard (all records destroyed) later spent time in the Poor House in Portsmouth - the records are sketchy. IF Ruth had died in the Poor House can we be sure her death would have been recorded properly? We have searched Ruth Edith Harper and tried Edith Ruth (she had a niece in the area of that name) Have we missed her - any help would be appreciated in finding Ruth's death.
