I have a G Grandmother called Ellen Hale Stockwell, who married William Allen in Wottom-under-Edge, Glos. in 1886. Unforrtunately I cannot find her parents or siblings, indeed nothing about her before she married William. Can anyone suggest where I might look? Her d.o.b is 28/02/1865.

Was Ellen's maiden name Hale? I have put every forename of her children with Hale in the hope that she may have used one of her parents names for one of her children but come up with nothing!!!
By the way, the first Ellen's birth date is correct

I realise Barbara has added to an old thread.
Barbara, have you bought William and Ellen's marriage certificate please? It may name her father and that may make it possible to identify her on earlier census records. From the GRO index of births for her children it gives her maiden name as Hale although she married as Stockwell. That would suggest either a previous marriage or that Stockwell was a stepfather's surname?
