Hi again,

I think, Paul, you should get Mary and William's marriage certificate and that will give you hopefully the name of Mary's dad, and how old she was roughly at the time of the marriage.

And get the death certificates for William and Dorothy. If they are correct they will give you the name ( hopefully ) of the informant.

It certainly looks like Mary Jane was a relative of you Dad, a possible aunty. It has been really great working with you. Please keep us informed.

I have posted one for Jane in 1901on previous page which i think could be Mary Jane. I see above that post you have her birth index sept quarter 1891 so she wouldn't be on that census

Janice, Thank you

can you please look up Mary Jane Patrick b. 1891/92

Thanks.

Congrats, nice result.

Get your certificates to confirm, Dorothy and Mary Jane could not be sisters if Dorothy was formerly Preece?

best regards Deborah

Paul Report 8 Oct 2008 21:31

I can't believe this is just about over. It's been a real adventure and an adrenaline rush.

I am deeply humbled by everyone's involvement. Kirsty.... Christine.... Janice.... Val... and Dea.

Now I know where my place is in my family and now the secret (if it was a secret) didn't die with my Dad. It lives on through me and I shall pass it on so that nobody has anything to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.

Bless you all.... and please stay in touch.

Your friend..... Paul Usher

Proud son of William Henry Patrick Usher 1922 - 1998.

Paul

Paul Report 8 Oct 2008 20:35

Thanks for that, Janice.

I actually have in my possession a Statutory Declaration that Dad signed in 1976.

In it he states that for the avoidance of doubt he wishes to always be known as and be addressed as William Henry Patrick Usher.

He also states that "The Persons whom I understood to be my parents were known to me as William Henry Usher and Mary Jane Usher. Their marriage was solemnised on the 24th day of December 1936. They raised me as a child and I knew no other persons as my parents.

Why was their marriage solemnised in 1936 when Dad was born in 1922??

So, going back to Dad's birth certificate (which I have) his parents are named as William Henry Patrick and Dorothy Patrick (formerly Preece).

If it William Henry's death details that have been found, and Dad was 3 when his Dad died, and assuming Dorothy couldn't cope and gave him up for adoption, then surely Dad wouldn't remember his biological parents.

Do you think I'm right to sumise all that?? What do you think??

Paul.

jansmith

jansmith Report 8 Oct 2008 20:08

cannot find a marriage so could one/both have been married ,if thats his death index then William would have been about 40 when your dad was born,Perhaps need that death cert to see if there are any other names on it
