I have a copy of Birth Cert. for Cyril Fitt, born 7th Feb. 1899 at 34 Goal Chambers, Kennington Goal. Registration Dist. Lambeth, sub dist. of Kennington in the County of London. Now, is it really Goal or was it supposed to be the old spelling Gaol (Jail). Often mis-read as 'Goal'. Father's name William Charles Fitt, Mother's name Isabella Jane Fitt formerly Wallis. Does the word 'formerly' mean a maiden name or previously married name? Also, they came to Australia, possibly to Tasmania. How can I found out when they emigrated? I would be grateful for any help. Thanks, Carolyn . Keeping in mind the time difference between UK and Aus. I will watch this space as often as I can.

The father was a Solicitor's clerk - so perhaps he lived in his employer's premises? Perhaps someone living in the London area can throw some light on the address!

Just looking at Walter Cyril's military records and his address is Vauxhall Street, Kennington OVAL!!!

He was discharge in 1917 as no longer fit for war service.

There is a copy of a letter that he wrote in 1920 asking about his war medals and ribbons.

His occuption is given as Gardener, height 5ft 4ins, fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on the back of left hand and one on right leg. He intended to live at (looks like) Hind Street, Poplar.

We would like to look at the letter Walter wrote in 1920 asking about his war medals and ribbons. Could you please tell us how to go about doing this.
