Crowther or Platt

The Crowthers would appear to have originated in Lockwood, Yorkshire but some of them migrated to Derbyshire, around Glossop, Hadfield or Padfield. No idea why.

Ann Crowther, b 1820 Lockwood, married George Platt of Glossop or therabouts, no problem with him. They are my gg grandparents. I have nothing on Ann Crowther before her marriage to George. Her marriage cert says her father is dead.

I have lots of bits and pieces about the family. I cannot determine the parents of Ann Crowther, but a whole host of Crowthers appear in Hadfield, Derbyshire etc in the 185os and later, and must be relatives. Son of Ann and George is Saville Platt (the family is transcribed as Plath and Matt - it is them), he is a draper and is imprisoned twice, 1874 for 4 months for selling property entrusted to his possession and in 1880 for stealing £90 from someone in Manchester. He is in Belle Vue Prison on the 1881 census. I cannot find him in 1871.

BUT alongside his conviction in 1874, is also a 9-month conviction for John Crowther, aged 53, a broker, for receiving stolen goods. Now Saville Platt may well be Saville Crowther Platt, he is not listed born that, nor on any census, but after his prison sentence he lives in a hostel, and later in Gossop Workhouse and is buried in the family grave in Glossop record as Saville Crowther Platt,.

Bright ideas appreciated. I am swimming.
