More information has been gained about the ancestors of the Cathersides in Rotherhithe and Deptford.
Grateful thanks are due to Bill Wood who lives in Durham and has painstakingly done research on the Catcheside family. He has located various documents including wills, hearth taxes and church records.
The first reliable Catcheside relative is Thomas Catchesyd b about 1595 in Birtley near Durham who had a pew in Chester le Street church in 1627 and was a churchwarden and Yeoman of the parish. He married Barbara Haddock and his will was published in 1663. He left money to his sister and brother as well as his son John b 1631 and his various grandchildren.
John Catcheside was born in 1631 in Chester le Street and he seems to have started the family occupation of Cordwainers (shoemakers). He was a Freeman of Durham and owned a large house in the Market Place of Durham. He married Sarah and they had 7 children
Thomas Catcheside b 1657 was John’s eldest child and like his father was a Cordwainer and owned property as a freeholder. He was a Guild member of Cordwainers and also a Freeman of Durham. He married Margaret Clarke and they had 10 children, the youngest being John b 1698.
John Catcheside b 1698 (not 1689 as previously thought) Durham married Sarah Forster. He was apprenticed to his father and like his father was a guild member and a freeman of Durham. John and Sarah had 5 children. Their fourth child was Moses b 1733 Chester le Street (named after Sarah’s father Moses Forster). Moses Catcheside was a direct ancestor of the Cathersides of Rotherhithe as his son Robert Catcheside b 1773 Chester le Street moved to Rotherhithe to become a cooper.
It is interesting to note that a Ralph Catcheside b 1625 ( the son of the first Thomas Catchesyd) was a wine cooper in London and that Ralph’s son also called Ralph was living under 10 miles from Rotherhithe in 1663.
Thanks are also due to George Kluth for the information about the descendents of Moses Catcheside.
