I thought I'd make a start. One of the surnames in your list is Baker.

From the list at the website:

http://www.stairwaytoheavenmemorial.org/gpage2.html

George Baker 38 (1904-1905)
Minnie Baker 14 (1928-29)

The disaster was like the censuses: happened in March.

Thank you Evie!

It looks much better like that and I didn't realise I couldn't put email address in so that's been deleted. Typical me, do the job before I read the instructions....oops.

A search-party would be great but I'm single-handed at the moment, helping out the secretary of the memorial trust because she already has so much to do. I've just got a cousin interested so, hopefully, he'll be of help too.

So far I've only contacted one name from the list that I saw on the community boards by chance. On my next day off I will have a delve about and see what I can come up with, as you say I could put more info about the victims on too. I just didn't want to bog people down all at once, was checking if there's interest first.

Thanks again for your invaluable advice, always grateful for being pointed in the right direction :-)

Posts like these are always interesting to me as glimpses of history we may never have heard about, and the ordinary people whose lives were affected.

You might want to post this on the General board to get a wider audience. (Since you're not asking people to spend time looking for things for you, I don't think the cross-post would be problematic.)

edit - you did, and it's here, and I've updated it with what we're doing here now:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1134373

(edited out oudated bumph)

>>> Oh, and another suggestion, if you're feeling ambitious. Has any search been done of trees here at GR to see whether any members have any of the missing people on them?

You might consider organizing a search party. ;) If you posted the full list of names and birthdates here, anyone who wanted could call dibs on a couple and then look for them here.

Best of luck with the search.

UPDATE - PLEASE SEE THE LONG POST BELOW ON THIS PAGE TITLED

"THIS IS THE LIST WE'RE WORKING FROM"

adding this here because the LIST post has grown to oversize. ;)

__________________________________________________________

PROCEDURE

- post that you are researching a name (name in CAPITALS)

- edit that post to report your results:
-- have not found the victim or relations in trees at GR
-- have found the victim or relation(s) in tree(s) at GR and have sent PM to tree owner

- there is a model letter to tree owners with matches on page 8 of this thread (please include the victim's name when the tree includes a relation of the victim but not the victim)

- send victim's details to Bethnal Green Tube Disaster (GR member Victoria, via name in post in this thread)
(see details to be sent on page 9 of this thread)
to be entered in Bethnal Green Tube Disaster tree at GR
- Please see PROCEDURE Q&As on page 12 of this thread for clarifications

Anna Report 12 Mar 2009 22:37

It's a long time ago but there still isn't a memorial to this tragedy, the worst civilian disaster of WW2.

I'm not asking you for money though (you can see their website for that and more info www.stairwaytoheavenmemorial.org) I'm looking for family and friends of the victims.

Their names need confirming and checking before they go onto the proposed memorial. Some have had people come forward but this list haven't.

So please read the list, is your surname or a family name there?

Do you know someone of same name as here?

Please Please talk to people about it, many got out of the habit of talking about it as it was kept so 'hush-hush' by the government of the day.

Your neighbour may have had someone involved and you never knew.

You may be doing the family tree and one of these names has cropped up but you have no more information.

Could they have been in Bethnal Green in 1943?

It was war time, some people weren't where they usually lived.

My Gt.Nan was killed there, she'd been moved out of her home (it was bombed out) into temporary accommodation, it wasn't her regular shelter, she'd just got off a bus with her son and got caught up in the crowd.

It may have happened to others. If you think there maybe a link please contact me, I have the whole list with first names and ages to help the search.

Hope you can help. Thanks for reading.

Here's the list of surnames:

Asser, Baker, Bass, Berger, Bendon, Bosworth, Boxer, Brooks, Chandler, Chapman, Collett, Court, Day, Dongrey, Ellam, Emery, Ewett, Fletcher, Forbes, French, Geary, Hales, Hammond, Hawley, Hayman, Higginson, Hillier, Hiscocke, Johns, Korobenic, Lawson, Leggett, Lewis, Loftus, Mason, Mathers, Mead, Morris, Myers, Newman, Newton, Nixon, Papworth, Poole, Pusey, Raulinaitis, Reynolds, Riddell, Roche, Sear, Smith, Stretch, Tarbuck, Taylor, Thompson, Tilbury, Trayling, Trice, Vann, Vanner, Warrington, Welch, Whitehead, Wilson.
